Old server useful for anything?

Go to solution Solved by unijab,

So for some reason I've been on a server kick and have been all over the internet looking at old servers for cheap and really want to buy one, almost just to have, but I can't find a reason to, or not to at this price, ( HP ProLiant BL460c Blade Server w/ 2x Intel E5160 3.00GHz / 8x 1GB RAM / NO HDD, $9.00 plus shipping (15) ) I need you guys to help rationalize why I should, or shouldn't by it, I know there's things like, running it as a home server or a torrent machine or slapping a fancy linux distro on it and calling it a pc, but is it worth it? Is there anything else I could do with it? Or is it a waste?

If it's working, even at $25 it's a steal.

I'm planning to buy an old DELL PowerEdge 850 which is nowhere near the specs you've described and it's like $75 (local seller, no shipping costs) and even THAT seems cheap for a server.

I guess I wasn't sure what to going for server specs was, I have a pretty good idea of knowing whether or not a pc is worth it, but I'm not aware of how server aging works.

I hoped on the order and will let you guys know about it when it comes in

Think of it as a 25 buck computer....Do you really care how well it runs? If it can boot, then you have a computer that you can do something with, even if you use it as a doorstop.

You have the blade system to use it??

mind giving me some details on that

RIIIIIIIGHT, that explains why its going for $9....

its a "blade" which means its supposed to go into one 4u (most of the time) rack case with 8 or more.

the power supply and rear IO is in the big box it plugs into.

kinda usueless without that.
