60hz=60 FPS ?

Go to solution Solved by Whorax,

Your card won't cap at 60fps, but your monitor will only display 60Hz...fps technically.

Hi, im pretty new to the forums and i would like somebody to answer this question for me please. okay so I decided to get a 980 Ti for my rig but instead of getting a new monitor i have a 1440p monitor that runs 60hz. I was just wondering, if i get this card and play with it , is my card going to max out at 60 fps ? and do i need a new monitor. (NOTE: my current monitor doesnt support g sync). Thank you!

Depends on the game and if you have V-Sync enabled. If V-Sync is disabled, the GPU will simply pump out as much frames as it can per second. The only thing disabling V-Sync would do is remove the additional input lag caused by it. You will not see any additional FPS unless you either overclock your monitor or buy one with a higher refresh rate.

No.

Unless you do give it a 60fps cap or enable VSync.

60 hertz means you will actually be able to see the 60fps anything above that you won't be able to. For example a 144hertz monitor you can see up to 144fps. Also the 980ti will be able to play any game 60fps in 1440p.

60Hz means that your monitor can display 60FPS at most BUT your GPU can still achieve more than 60FPS which causes tearing.

V-Sync kinda removes that as it locks the FPS to your Hz but it introduces some input lag. You can also manualy set game to not run over 60FPS with some software but you will always get some tearing unless you have G-Sync monitor or Adaptive-Sync / Free-Sync.

Lets define a Hertz (Hz). A hertz is an event described in time. So if something runs at 1 Hz it does something every second.

At 60Hz, the monitor refreshes the image 60 times a second. So it is 60 frames-per-second.

Vsync just puts your maximum refresh rate at the one of the monitor.

So if Vsync is on, you can not go above 60FPS, but it it is off, you can.

i really do hate the input lag on vysnc, it feels juddery, what i do is if i want 60fps and nothing more, i usually see if the game can have the fps capped without using vysnc, like battlefield 4, instead of vsync i would just use the command "gametime.maxvariablefps", you get the same fps but its so much smoother.
