Whenever I play Witcher 3, my 980 Ti goes up to 83C and stays there. I'm wondering if this is because the fan adjusts to keep the GPU at this temp.

Yes.

When your GPU gets hotter, it spins the fan faster to compensate for that. I think it has something to do with a fan curve too, but not sure.

No, the Core clock adjusts to not let the card go over 83C

83C is the thermal limit on Maxwell

CPU: Intel i7 5820K @ 4.20 GHz | MotherboardMSI X99S SLI PLUS | RAM: Corsair LPX 16GB DDR4 @ 2666MHz | GPU: Sapphire R9 Fury (x2 CrossFire)

gpu boost 2.0.

your gpu will "overclock" itself to run as fast as possible, capping itself at 83°c

not 980Ti, but it paints the picture.

92C is the maximum temp according to the specs of the Ti, does it set itself to 83C to prevent the card from having a short life span?

92C is the limit for 980 Tis. If the fan speed is only at 45% when I'm playing Witcher 3 and the temp is 83C, should I be worried?

you can manually adjust fanspeed if tou are worried

well I would set the fan speed higher cuz that's quite hot for a Maxwell card
