So I've been looking for a CPU and I find Xeons generally go for pretty cheap.

Like right now I see a Xeon E5 1620. How would something like this perform in gaming?

What other Xeons go for cheap used that will perform good in gaming?

you need a special socket FCLGA2011 for that CPU

they usually perform worse than i5s and i7s because of the lower clock speed, and core performance is what matters in almost every game

if you are doing rendering, 3d modeling, etc.. then yeah a xeon will be better

So you prefer a lower clock speed and higher core count with around the same ipc of i5 gen? I doubt DX11 is going to utilize more cores like FX..........

wait what i never said Id use a Xeon for gaming. Im ordering the 4790k

You said "Youd need a high end Xeon for gaming".

yeah you would you cant play AAA titles on a low clock speed Xeon its not made for that. Its comparing a Quaddro to a 980Ti for rendering

The E5-1620 is clocked at 3.5GHZ and is hyper threaded w/ four cores.

Xeons are mostly used for servers & workstations but they usually perform between an i7 and i5 in gaming scenarios.

Thanks. was asking because some are going for less then $100. What socket would I need for it? This one is at 3.5GHZ 4 cores 8 threads

According to PCPartPicker, the E5-1620 is compatible with most X79 motherboards, so no need for special motherboards.

Higher end Xeons have a higher core count and a lower clock speed, you except to fit 4.5GHZ in a 18 core chip......

Of course it wont but its a waste of money.

The E5-1620 is clocked at 3.5GHZ and is hyper threaded w/ four cores.

Why would you get that then? Only 4 cores ?

Only 4... Also,it's 3.7Ghz, was looking at the wrong one.

3.7Ghz 4 Cores 8 Threads. I don't think it's a waste of money for the price I might buy it at

xeons offer great value. the e5 1620 has 4 cores 8 threads. all cores will boost up to 3.6 ghz under load. it is a sandybridge part. it would roughly be the equivalent of an i7 2600 (non k)

this chip should work in any X79 motherboard. xeon memory controllers are usually a bit weaker

Get a LGA 1136 Xeon. 55xx(4C/8T $15-45) or 56xx (6C/12T $65+) series are inexpensive and perform very well for gaming, especially after OCing. Be wary of motherboards. Probably gonna have to drop $70+ on a decent one.

If you want extra power, you can even go Dual Xeons

How does the Xeon E3 1275v3 Perform? Found one cheap and supports LGA1150 mobos. How good of a mobo should I get?

1275 is pretty much a 4790(K) in terms of performance. Not much of a difference between it and the 1230v3 (which I'd cheaper brand new).

Motherboard for the 1275 or for the LGA 1136 Xeon?

For the 1275, says it supports LGA1150. The 1230v3 I doubt is going for as cheap as the 1275 used.

Cheapest one you can afford that supports the 1275. It's a locked CPU so I doubt you need the bells and whistles of higher end boards.

Whatever is cheaper I would get. Can't go wrong with either for gaming or rendering

Yeah, they are going for as cheap as the i5-2500k and I assume perform a bit better.

Generally when I suggest a Xeon for PC use its either the OP isn't going to overclock and is doing more than just gaming.

I usually suggest http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646e31231v3

It is the equivalent of the i7-4770

The big advantage is the i5 price with i7 performance.
