Help me get into strategy games

tornados2111

I've never really played a strategy game that much, last time was civ 2 possibly which was a good few years ago. I feel like having good deep experience, with a lot to learn in the game just because I'm a bit tired of action action action. Wanna relax a bit and enjoy the stories that I hear come from strategy games. I don't know what are well regarded ones though, help me guys, what should I start off with, what are some well regarded ones?

Age of Empires used to be awesome back in the day. Empire earth was awesome as well. But now obiously the graphics will suck. AOE III is good place to start. Total war franchise are awesome as well.

The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.

If you don't like them, don't force yourself to play them.

It's not that I don't like them. I actually don't know what I think of them but I have heard good things and I am feeling like trying out something outside of my comfort zone. I think every now and then we all need to do this in anything in life because you never know what you might like :D

COH 2 if you don't mind the historical inaccuracies same with COH except it's not as bad as the second

actually, I'm going to look in my friends steam list and copy and paste all the stratgey games he plays the most (he's a huge strategy game buff)
Civ IV
Crusader Kings

total War: SHOGUN 2

Victoria 2

RUSE

Anno 2070
Stronghold 2

Hearts of Iron 3

March of Eagles

agreed, either you have to be in the right mindset or you just don't like them :/

This is off-topic but I can't help but notice you have a 2700K on a z77 board. Is that a bad thing?

wat

oddest question ever, but no, because it's a socket LGA 1155, so it's designed to fit on these boards, Z77 doesn't necessarily mean Ivy Bridge, plus I love Sandy Bridge cause those overclocks doe

lol sorry for the irrelavent question. For some reason I always thought that somehow z77 was optimised for ivy bridge overclocking somehow? but that's a stupid thought I guess. Now lets get off this off-topic

I'm actually starting to think I'd have a bigger interest in turn based stuff. And as far as I know starcraft is all reactions. I wanna play something slow where I can take my time

Sounds like you want things like Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea, but for PC. Although I can only think of RPGs as turn based, so I hope you like them. Do note that Tactical and Strategy games are often the same thing...

King's Bounty

Jagged Alliance 2

The Last Remnant

PoxNora (Free to play)

Heroes of Might and Magic (the series)

Disciples 2

Other notables (the only requirement these fulfill is turn based gameplay)

Temple of Elemental Evil (Basically Dungeons and Dragons, and one of the best versions of it in a game)

Fallout 1 and 2 (Not grand scale, but turn based and tactical)

Planescape: Torment

Baldur's Gate

Knights of the Old Republic

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

So yeah. Have fun. Hope some of them are good for you. PoxNora being F2P makes it a good one to start with btw.

Gog's website has many older titles to choose from and many of the better, older, Tactical/turn based games can be bought there. Just saying, Steam's selection for older PC games is ... paltry imo.

If you don't like them, don't force yourself to play them.

You might not like them but learn to love them my advice is get Star Craft on battle.net (because it is cheap in case you hate it) and play single player on the hardest setting and this will set you up for multiplayer. But I am no master I am terrible at these games yet I own Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3, Civ IV, Starcraft, Starcraft 2, and Starcraft HotS because they are fun I enjoy the gameplay.
