should i swap my 970 for a 390 if its true about aysnc?

what do you guys think about the title, ive had my 970 for around id say 7 months now, i could somehow try and get a full refund for it from scan.co.uk and say the vram is playing up and get an r9 390.

I wouldnt, the 970 is still a great card and nVidia will probably do something to optimize their cards better. Or they'll give you more free games.

i did want to sli my 970, i couldnt cf 390s as my psu is 650 watts and im not buying another psu, tbh i only play 1080p so i doubt id see the difference  anyway.

If you could get a full refund then go for but I wouldn't do it before more benchmarks have come out it's a bit too early to tell. And if Pascal fixes this problem you can just upgrade to that

yeah ive told many people now not to believe everything they see on the internet, its a shame some do, i was live chatting to nvidia yesterday and the guy said there isnt even an  issue with it, but said he will get further info for me and email me.

I doubt Nvidia would go down without a fight. See what happens when DX12 games are actually with us. I'm certainly not going to be swapping my 980 Ti for a Fury or whatever :3.

Is this about the Asynchronous shading stuff?

Maxwell DOES support Async shading, so I don't know why that would be a reason to swap out your GPU.

well you do realise it has more vram that can be fully  used without issues, right?

 

i edited the main post, i was actually meant to say if dx12 isnt fully supported.

 

as of now its just a rumor thats not verified by nvidia.

Maxwell 2 cards are all perfectly capable of DX12. I won't trust a demo (based on an RTS, too.) made by an unproven indie studio. We'll have to wait until we get a game from a real dev before we can see if there really is a problem, but I don't think so.

In regards to the purpose of Async compute, there are really 2 main reasons for it:

1) It allows jobs to be cycled into the GPU during dormant phases. In can vaguely be thought of as the GPU equivalent of hyper threading. Like hyper threading, it really depends on the workload and GPU architecture for as to how important this is. In this case, it is used for performance. I can’t divulge too many details, but GCN can cycle in work from an ACE incredibly efficiently. Maxwell’s schedular has no analog just as a non hyper-threaded CPU has no analog feature to a hyper threaded one.

2) It allows jobs to be cycled in completely out of band with the rendering loop. This is potentially the more interesting case since it can allow gameplay to offload work onto the GPU as the latency of work is greatly reduced. I’m not sure of the background of Async Compute, but it’s quite possible that it is intended for use on a console as sort of a replacement for the Cell Processors on a ps3. On a console environment, you really can use them in a very similar way. This could mean that jobs could even span frames, which is useful for longer, optional computational tasks.

It didn’t look like there was a hardware defect to me on Maxwell just some unfortunate complex interaction between software scheduling trying to emmulate it which appeared to incure some heavy CPU costs. Since we were tying to use it for #1, not #2, it made little sense to bother. I don’t believe there is any specific requirement that Async Compute be required for D3D12, but perhaps I misread the spec.

If you can just return it and swap it for a 390 without paying anything then do it. Otherwise it's better to keep, because it's still a pretty decent card. DX12 games will probably be released next year so you have time to decide whether to upgrade. We are still waiting for an official statement about the whole DX12 fiasco though.

They also slapped 4GB of usable VRAM on the box of the 970 - nothing illegal about that.

no, they said its  4GB card which it is, just   0.5 is slower, thats not illegal but the incorrect specs of the rops and cache is.

Well - the 970 technically IS DX12 ready - it's just not ready for the features Nvidia deemed "unimportant"  - what can I say, when a company gets 80% market share - they get evil and will do things like this to force people to buy the 1070, 1170 and so on.

AFAIK Nvidia didn't run around screaming "Hey!, EVERYONE! THE 970 CAN ONLY USE 3.5 GB of VRAM - SCREW YOU, GIVE US MORE MONEY!" now, did they?
