Just pirate Windows :P

give them 8gb 4gb isn't enough these days

I know enough about components for a gaming pc (I've built one myself), but I was considering building a desktop for my grandma, and I know nothing about components for something like that.  She'd be browsing mostly, and may watch a video now and again.  Any recommendations?

I'd try to get it to boot fast and be quiet and affordable. So, an SSD's a must (a 240GB one'll do, she's not going to be installing all the new AAA titles and shooting up strip clubs in GTA V, I doubt), and the silencio 352's a pretty affordable quiet case. Has really nice dust filtration, too.

The pentium G3258'd do fine for just browsing, and then if granny wants to start making movies you can upgrade later to a better socket 1150 chip.

You could ditch the aftermarket cooler, you'd be fine with the stock. It probably wouldn't be too loud anyway. Tbf she might not hear it anyway if she's old and her hearing's going.

As for an OS, you could just stick linux on it if all she's doing is browsing.

Meow meow meow meow hiss meow purr.

Hardcore nan clearly wants to overclock to squeeze all of the performance possible out of that chip so she can play minecraft at the highest fps possible on her 1600x900 panel. Imperative she's got a Z97 mobo, clearly.
