POST question

Go to solution Solved by colonel_mortis,

If it booted normally, it passed POST. if it failed POST, it would have beeped multiple times, and not successfully booted. You're absolutely fine :)

So this morning it was quite noise in my room with my birthday and all (water running, dialogue going on between me and my mom, fans spinning) and I didn't hear the POST beep - now - everything booted up normally and the paranoid individual in me rebooted 5 time and it posted every single one - haven't know the system to miss one before and my question is - if it doesn't post - could it load normally? I thought that if no post is heard you get a black screen or the PC flat out refuses to boot.

what

You're seriously paranoid that if you miss a beep - which I might add, I don't even hear anymore due to being so used to it - that you reboot 5 times to see if it beeps and then ask if a computer that starts up just fine loads normally?

what

POST - power on self test - the beep you hear from the PC which means everything is fine on with power and voltages and everything is properly connected.

Hah, sorry, yeah, I'm pretty paranoid - I've had some issues which I could share if you want - I now think the issue is the software but I was scared it might be a dying GPU or Mobo - I replaced my old PSU for coil whine since I was not about to let it burn my PC which took so much effort to get.

Are you sure you actually turned your computer off the night before and it wasn't just in hibernation mode? Would explain the absence of the post beep.

I'm pretty sure I did - I also might just not have heard it - like I said - was noise, was curious whether it could boot up normally if no post since that usually means PSU or Mobo issues.

Some reasons why you don't hear beeping or see anything:

- you have turned those things off from mobo

- screen isn't on

- background noise is covering beeping.

Your computer is fine. The majority of computers I've used don't have a post beep. Or if they do, they have it switched off. Normally the POST beep comes from a buzzer connected to the motherboard. Most of the motherboards I've seen have headers for said buzzer, but not the buzzer itself.

Screen wasn't on I believe - not yet anyway - that could actually cause it?

At some point, my old PC stopped beeping while booting up.

Everything is gonna be fine.

I get you tho, I'm kinda the same...

I didn't even use to listen to it but now that I know it's a thing I try my best to note it every boot-up :D

Eh, I've been all over the place recently - here's a shortlist of why

So far

Chivalry Artifacts - people have noted that on Nvidia so it might be just a bug

Chivalry Crashing - followed a forum's advice and deleted CookedSDK and it went away

Crysis 2 flickering - not sure but it was there 7 months ago IIRC

Firefox - guess it really is a bug after the screen you showed me

Coil Whine - I guess that's an odd ball - it went away but it was whiny for the first day after I put the card back

GPU-Z readings - so far I've seen 3 cards read the same - 1 gigabyte and 2 sapphire and I refuse to believe a guy who bought 2x 280Xs has 2 broken VRMs and 2 separate cards from 2 separate batches

HWmonitor's 1.250 seems the same as Aida64 which is well within normal reedings

Temps - I guess they're fine so far

Buggy Models in Chivalry - probably the engine

I was pretty sure it's the GPU - almost sent it back - but I dug some more, some Nvidia guy told me had the same black things in chivalry - and yeah - a friend showed me a similarly messed up firefox :D

it could also be the buzzer that's the source - or I just didn't hear it while talking with my mom.
