My dad is looking for a basic computer. He will just browse the internet and very basic things like that. He needs an OS but no peripherals. His is currently a Pentium 4 computer. It will also need space for a second Hard Drive, he wants to keep his current one. The price range will be about $200-$300 USD. He just wants it to be faster than his current computer. I was also wondering of at that budget he might as well get a pre-built system.

Thanks

Can you re-use things like the case, psu, etc.? If so, what do you plan on re-using? It would be hard to build an entire computer for $300 if all the parts are new.

This is a difficult request for a build considering the cost of the OS makes up a third of the budget.

That being said, here's my recommendation: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1pTgp

You'll have to mount the ssd anywhere else in the case but the drive cage to fit your old 3.5" hdd.

This is not necessary but I suggest removing the back 2 fans or replacing them with quieter ones if they are too loud: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/silenx-case-fan-ixp3408

and/or adding a 80mm and/or 120mm fan in the front and side of the case.

80mm: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/apevia-case-fan-cf8s

120mm: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/antec-case-fan-truequiet120

I guess some people don't understand, This just needs to access the internet quicker than a pentium 4 processor. I was thinking AMD would be better

AMD and Intel are both around the same price point for your build. It'd be at least $90-100 for the cpu/mobo combo.

Think of this in terms of minimum/average pricing for your parts:

OS: $90

Storage: $50

Ram: $30

Cpu: $40-50

Mobo: $40-50

That's about $250-270 minimum without the case, psu, and other fees.
