FX 8350 Overclocking walkthrough

Go to solution Solved by MeltyMoon,

Yea, it sucks...but AMD chips have to be kept fairly cool now. Phenom IIs recommended max temperature was around 65ish and nothing has really changed since then.

If you want to go the bus overclocking route, linus explains that a little bit in this video;

Being you are new to this, you may just want to go the straight multiplier route, so this should also be helpful (keep in mind that this is an 8150, I would try and keep the voltage lower than what Linus is using)

And I just quoted myself and not the op......whoopsies.

@Lazmarr check out these videos and let us know how you're feeling afterwards ;)

I have just built a new system and I am wanting a walkthrough to overclocking my FX 8350. My system is as follows;

CPU: AMD FX 8350

CPU Cooler: Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 2

RAM: 8Gb Corsair Vengeance LP (2x4Gb)

Mobo: Asus Sabertooth 990fx R2.0

HDD: Seagate Baracude Sata III 2TB

GPU: Sapphire HD 4870 1Gb QP

Gaming PC: Case: NZXT Phantom 820 Black | PSU: XFX 750w PRO Black Edition 80Plus Gold (Platinum) | CPU: Intel Core i5 4690K | CPU Cooler: BE QUIET! Dark Rock Pro 2 | MB: ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark S | RAM: 24GB Kingston HyperX and Corsair Vengeance 1866MHz | GPU: MSI R9 280X 3G | SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 250GB | HDD: 9TB Total | Keyboard: K70 RGB Brown | Mouse: R.A.T MMO7

  • Go into the bios

increase mulitiplier by 1

Test for stability using Prime95 Small FFT for an hour while you monitor temp with HWMonitor.

Repeat if stabil

If unstabil go back into the bios and increase core voltage by 0.05

Test for stability with prime95 Smal FFT while you monitor temp with HWMonitor

Repeat until CPU hits 75C  on the hottest core (Some will say 80C and some will say 90C is OK, but I say 75C)

Finally test for complete stability with Prime95 Small FFT for 24-48 hours.

The epeen of having something running @ 5GHz, you must overclock.

Please don't only CPU multiplier OC on an AMD chip. You gotta play with the bus speed too boys. Smh, personally if you want to go for the highest speed possible, I would recommend dropping the multiplier, and cranking the bus speed up, once you've done that, start raising the multiplier back up to an OC'd frequency. For starters try running a 225 - 250 bus with a multiplier that will bring you somewhere around 4.2-4.4 Ghz. You may have to play with the voltage if you're near 4.4 Ghz. Also keep in mind that raising the bus speed will OC your North Bridge, RAM, and Hyper Transport Bus. Run dividers on those, around 230ish they should be back around stock with 1 divider being run. RAM you can usually OC up to an extra 100 Mhz with no issues. You could run a divider on the RAM too if you wanted to play it safe.

overclocking is complex, your rig is fine, go look up what other people have gotten with the FX 8350 and that cooler and see what they got, and adjust accordingly

sorry to ask but why that GPU?

I'm a PC n00b...I've never overclocked a CPU before T_T

I already had this GPU, got it for £40 a year or two back and it's been maxing most games out at a 'decent' frame rate, in some games it's ~30fps and others it can be as high as ~70fps. But I am going to upgrade to the next gen AMD 9000 cards :P

It's pretty simple to be honest. I OC'd my 1035T when I was 11 or 12, it was locked so I had to do it the hard way, through bus overclocking. Start off small, small jumps at a time. Don't touch the voltage if you're uncomfortable ;)

AND DON'T LET YOUR CPU CORES HIT 75 DEGREES CELSIUS. Oh my god, that chip would be dead within a year. These chips along with bulldozer, and phenom ii should be kept under 60 degrees celsius @Volbet  :blink:

Can you please explain it a little bit more, since I'm new to OC'ing?

Really 60C? Of course the recommended max temperature different is from architecture to architecture, but isn't 60C a bit low?

Also I'm glad you came along to tell him about overclocking on the northbridge and the bus. The last AMD processor I overclocked was a Athlon 64 3000+, so my knowladge in that area is fearly limited when it come to newer CPU's.

It's really hard to explain much further without having access to your specific motherboard and getting bios pictures to show you what to change.  Every motherboard bios is different.  If you look up overclocking settings on the motherboard you have you can probably figure out from their settings what you need to change.

Good to know. I can only tell you that if an Athlon 64 3000+ hit 152C it blows up in a cloud of smoke.

I think I will overclok my CPU, but I may wait until I get my new GPU before I do any major overclocking. Also does the FX 8350 have that cool 'n' quiet; and is that the setting that makes teh CPU perform slower when not under load?
