I am asking because the AC/heater at my house is broken it is going to cost way more to fix than i can afford right now.

 

I will fix it next year with income tax.

 

But to get through the winter i have decided to take my old pc's i have lying around and set up as many as needed to keep my room warm.

 

 

If it helps most of my old pc's are OEM,single core 1.4ghz-3.2ghz(3 AMD,5+ Intel i think),with OEM 250w PSU's,and still in the crappy OEM case's.

 

If you guys need exact models of the cpu's i can try to find out,but it may take 15+ minutes,just let me know if you need it.

You would be better off (both economical and amount of heat) to buy a room heater of some sort.

How much do you wanna pay in power though? and how low do temps get?

if i were you i'd just use a hairdryer. it uses less power and makes more heat

Actual space heaters are a lot more efficient at producing heat. So the best option would sadly be to get something small and cheap (check craigslist).

 

Computers does however produce heat, but it's not nearly enough to heat up a whole apartment.

 

If you're not able to get a proper space heater, then I would probably just use the main rig for Folding. And put on an extra layer of clothing.

You'd be better off with a crazy machine that has 4x crossfire reference 290Xs. that's a 1400W space heater right there :3

When it's chilly I hardly notice my single 290(OC), unless I turn my computer so the exhaust fan blows on me. Then it's nice and cozy. :3

But when it's already 90F in my room, it's awful. Almost moved my computer outside the door and had my desk on the inside.

if you really want a space heater pc go buy a amd fx 9000 series and watercool it to get the maximum amount of heat out of the pc into your room

I snuggle with my laptop at night during winter while having it render. It's nice ^^

the problem is that my room is small and because of that very crowded,and i would be worried about something either melting or catching on fire.

How much do you wanna pay in power though? and how low do temps get?

With how things are money wise,i would rather a slightly higher costs over time than a upfront cost,and temps in the winter i think get to around 60f give or take a few,i know it is cold enough that sitting for a long time at my pc wearing socks,sweat pants and a t-shirt,and i still get cold enough to need a blanket. 

 

And to those that say that 60f is not cold i live in texas,so it is cold to me.

Because the reference cooler takes all that heat and dumps it out of the machine through a single vent in the card. Instead of keeping the card nice and cool by dissipating the heat throughout the machine.

The heat still ends up in the room either way.

It should work fine in Texas. I would trust a computer over an actual space heater. It won't be super warm but it should take the edge off.

Ok i am going to do my best to remember as many of the systems as i can.

 

2.4ghz amd sempron,1gb ram,nvida 7900gs

 

2.4ghz amd athlon 64,2gb ram,ati hd 4650

 

3.2ghz intel celron,2gb ram,no gpu

 

1.5ghz intel celron,512mb ram,no gpu

 

1.8ghz intel pentium 4,512mb ram,no gpu

 

1.4ghz intel pentium 4,512mb ram,no gpu

 

1.3ghz intel pentium 3,512mb ram,no gpu

 

Dual 2ghz xeon w/HT 3gbram,no gpu

 

 

other than those i have 3 system that will power on but not post,and one that is unstable and boot loops no matter the OS,all due to dead mobo's,but idk if they would produce much if any heat if i left them running.

 

No Post:

2ghz intel pentuim dual core,3gb ram,no gpu

 

2.2ghz phenom 1 quad core,4gb ram,amd 7750

 

3.6ghz amd fx-8150,8gb ram,270x(this system also has a 1000w PSU,and i have a dead 7970 that will not post but the fans spin,so if even running them without posting will make some heat i could add this gpu for more heat)

 

 

To you guys who don't think i should,i would rather pay some extra on my electric bill than a high upfront cost,plus i only want to heat my 10ftx10ft room by 10f-15f.

The faster the heat dissipation the faster the room heats up a better cooler doesn't mean less heat coming out.... same amount of heat just getting out into the air faster

I would have thought it would leave at least slightly faster coming directly out the back of the machine rather than being caught in the case for the exhaust fans to suck out. You could always point the computer the other way and have the vents blowing on your legs and feet :P

Do you have a main rig? at 60f you could easily warm that up enough with 1 or two of those pc's the only trouble being that crappy pc's don't actually produce that much heat, they just don't get rid of it fast

Pretty much any pc is equally efficient when used as a space heater. Almost all of the power a pc consumes is directly converted to heat.

I used a red ringed xbox under my blanket blowing up at me :3
