Game of War executive arrested.

A former executive at Machine Zone, Jing Zeng, has been arrested for allegedly stealing trade secrets from the developer of Game of War: Fire Age.

 

 

 

Zeng joined Machine Zone in 2014, but reportedly became unhappy in his position by spring, and asked to change teams. His request was denied and his superiors asked him to leave the company, at which point it's alleged he started to download the data, which among other things, specified how users spend money in the game. The Wall Street Journal says that Zeng then tried to use the data as a bargaining chip to secure himself a bigger severance payment when he was confronted by his colleagues. 
42-year-old Jing Zeng was detained by FBI agents on August 20 as he attempted to board a plane for Beijing, China, according to federal documents obtained by the publication.

 

Wow, seems like a really scummy move. I've never actually played Game of War, so I don't really have much of an opinion on this.

 

 

"Confronted by company executives, Mr. Zeng tried to use the files as a bargaining chip for a severance agreement, according to the complaint. The company appeared open to a three-month package, while Mr. Zeng wanted six or seven months, the complaint said. He then allegedly gave conflicting accounts of how many copies he made and whether some of the storage devices holding the files were in China or San Ramon. The company, in the meantime, contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Agents arrested him as he tried to board a flight Aug. 20."

Having never even heard of Game of War, I'm a neutral party here, but he did a generally shitty thing so I'd say he got what he deserved. The real question is why he thought it was a good idea to begin with. When was the last time extortion actually worked outside of a movie? I don't see how any of this could possibly have ended well.
