ASUS GTX 970 Weird Noise

Hello,

 

I turned off v-sync whilst playing a couple of games just to see what frame rate would be achieved and I noticed that my GPU makes a high pitched noise but this only happens whilst playing a game as when pauses occur the noise stops immediately and resumes just as quick when the game starts again. I wanted to see if it was the fans so I went into MSI Afterburner and played around with the fan speed testing a bunch of levels to see if it was a specific percentage that caused the noise but nothing. The sound that is made is never heard when doing this.

 

I dont understand what it is because surely putting the fan speed at 35% in game would produce the same sound as 35% on the desktop but there is a high pitched sound. I turned on v-sync on CS-GO and the sound does quieten down to the point that it is no longer noticeable but I would still want to find out what is causing it.

 

I am 100% sure that it isn't coil whine because as I said, spinning the fans up on the desktop doesn't produce this noise. To add to this, when using ALT+TAB the noise also immediately stops and doesn't come back until I go back into game. It could be a game issue as I don't seem to get this with GTA 5 or games that are also as demanding.

That's coil whine. It's brought on by high loads, especially with higher framerates.

 

Coil whine isn't made by the fans, it's made by the electrical components on board. Mine does it too. The Strix card is notorious for it.

Different power supply's have different effects on coil whine with graphics cards, either replace your PSU or get sound proof headphones or Deal with it

Guys,mine does it too(EVGA SC),what headphones do you use? Do you prefer open or closed to block noise?

My card did it quietly for a while, but it seemed to have disappeared or greatly reduced over time (or i just don't notice it anymore lol).
