Hi everybody,

I'm a proud owner of Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T7200 on socket 479 mPGA. What is the most powerful CPU that I can get in there without spending excessive amounts of money?

I'd love to provide more info about the motherboard but all that CPU-Z says about it is that the manufacturer is TOSHIBA, model ISRAE. All all that Google tells me about it is "Did you mean "TOSHIBA ISRAEL retail?". So yea...

CPU is not soldered to the motherboard like in most laptops now. There's normal socket allowing CPU to be replaced.

This website may help with showing what's compatible with that socket: http://www.cpu-world.com/Sockets/Socket%20479%20(mPGA479M).html

Sorry I don't really know much about this.

I saw that. It says that the best CPU I can put there is Core 2 Duo Mobile T7600G. But that's also the only info I can find on that and I wouldn't base my purchase on one website. On the other hand T7600 is not that much of an improvement over T7200.

I'm assuming this is in a laptop - If so you generally can't/people don't upgrade the cpu.

Nah, most laptops are actually socketed it's quite a big misconception that all laptop cpus are soldered.

To be honest it still isn't, from Intel only the ULV and the H(Q) series CPUs are soldered.

It should also accept Penryn (45nm) based microprocessors with a 800mhz FSB such as the T8100.

That's what I'd look for OP because they are cheap as chips.

Why's that?

Core2Duo is still serviceable for general computing.

Thanks for your answer =). I'll try finding one of those preowned on the internet.

This computer is being used as a surveillance device. It grabs footage from a few 720p cameras over ethernet, analyses the footage frame by frame to detect movement and saves files on the HDD. This laptop is pretty much enough right now, but I'm planning to add more cameras in a few days and it's already struggling that's why I want to upgrade the CPU.

Basically look, it's a TOSHIBA from 2006 that sits on my attic to grab footage from IP cameras 24/7, telling me to put a new laptop there is really not helpful. Sorry.

I get it, its just that laptop cpus aren't upgraded because there's usually only a few compatible chips in a given laptop chipset and they're likely only differentiated by a few hundred mhz of clock speed which generally doesn't amount to much of a performance delta. That's if the laptop manufacturer even lets you put different chips in which isn't always the case.

For surveillance I would definitely look into a new computer when you add additional cameras. An inexpensive i3 is cheap and powerful.

So even if the CPU is replaceable in this laptop it's probably  to replace it with the same model and any higher CPUs probably won't work?

By inexpensive i3 you mean to build a PC and swap it with this laptop using some older model of Core i3, like 4GB of RAM and a good HDD? Well, that's not a bad idea taking into consideration that it would consume less power in 24/7 operation than this laptop with like 120W power supply. But still definitely more expensive than I planned with just upgrading CPU.

Not necessarily, you can grab a cheapo LGA 1156 i3 for like $10 on ebay, boards aren't too expensive either, and I recon you could cannibalize an old OEM for a case and PSU.

It might work, but it also might not. If you can find a used chip for $20 or something it might be worth a shot. Also yes, that's what I mean, a new or used budget i3 desktop system will sprint circles around an old laptop

Because laptop cooling systems are only rated for the CPU they came with.  any better CPU would be thermal throttled or damaged by the heat.

Well, I think it's true if you assume that better CPU outputs more heat and I'm not certain if it's really the case.

If I can get a cheap i3 for like $10 I think there's no reason in investing $20 in like 10 years old notebook. Yea, maybe it was like 2000$, but again a few years ago =).
