Best CPU for gaming?

Go to solution Solved by JebKerman,

I think I am right to question the reason for this thread in the first place.

You seem so heavily biased towards your own proposition that you are outright rejecting all other possible candidates.

YES, the 6700K is the best CPU for gaming, but it's overkill (on thread count) unless you are streaming or rendering on the side.

BUT, The 6600K has almost identical gaming performance at 60-70% the price. And is entirely capable of running dual 980 tis as even the 4690K can handle it.

Make of it as you will. But it seems you've already made your decision.

There are almost no difference from DDR3 to DDR4 if you are planning to use CPU + dedicated GPU. The only difference would be if you want to use the iGPU.

Dont fall for this "I need to have the last technology", not always compensates.

If you are already spending that much on GPU, I would go for X99 + i7 5820k

It depends on what you are planing on to do if just gaming the 6600k, if video editing the 6700k.

And 2 980 ti's for 1080p is overkill 1 is more then enough for 1080p and 1440p.

I am not building a £3000 rig and putting an i5 in it xD Plus it would bottle neck in that high of a setup.

Though i get what you are saying. Also try running GTA 5 maxed out every setting and staying at 60fps not even two 980 tis can do it at 1080p.

You don't need a i7 to game, the i5 6600K is most likely a better choice. Not that Skylake is overpriced for a gaming rig at all :P But yes 6600K for you. And you WONT benefit from DDR4 on a gaming rig so thats pretty useless.

No i am building i high end rig and i would like to future proof it, No i5 plus it would bottle neck my GPUs as they are high end i have seen people test. I would be losing about 10fps and that is just horrible.

At the moment i am thinking about the i7 6700k

I do not want to use intels 4th gen chips as i want DDR4 and as i am making a new build i would like to be up to date.

I will have two 980ti's in SLI

Gaming at 1080p maybe 1440p later down the line

an i5 6600k will do fine. And as mentioned before, DDR4 makes no difference at all in gaming performance.

No way i use an i7 3770k at the moment i am not building a £3000 rig and putting an i5 in it xD Plus it would bottle neck in that high of a setup.

What? An i5 will handle 2 980Ti's fine.

If you know you're going for an i7 instead of an i5 then why make this topic?

are you doing triple monitors or something? i see no reason to go SLI 980ti's for gaming. tough if you really hate your money, i guess you could do it.

getting these cards means you'll need a good CPU too to prevent bottlenecks. i think maybe a 5930K?

seriously, for gaming an I5 would be more then enough tough.

i5 4690k is highly recommended for gaming due to only being cheaper than i7's and you only need a 4 threaded CPU.

The i5 6600k is probably a better CPU and is probably going to be the new CPU of choice for gaming.

Just watch this then come back.

See at least you know your stuff. Though to play every game on MAX and get 60fps plus. I am trying to aim for 144fps You do need two 980ti's Even at 1080p. As two of them can not even run GTA 5 maxed out and always get 60fps + But they do come close.

It would be the weak link, but NOT a bottleneck.

i'm sorry but you have got to be the most 'doesn't make any sense type of person' i've ever come across. Who told you that you NEED 2x 980Ti's on 1080p? 1x 980Ti will be more than capable. Not the constant 60fps but it will be playable on most games. I mean, who would wanna run EVERY game on Ultra settings anyway? You're gaining nothing apart from quality (which makes no sense to me) instead of performance. Running Medium or Custom settings on games these days is more than enough.

Just watch this please? Then try telling me an I5 is good enough, Also i do not want good enough i would like the best. Sorry i am coming of as kind of an ass whole xD

that's showing a couple of i7 processors. Not your states "hurr hurr an i5 will bottleneck 2x 980Ti's"

For a little more than a 6700K, you can get a 5820K X99 system (sometimes cheaper, depending on prices in your location)

The 6600K will handle two 980Tis fine, but obviously the 6700K is the better CPU. I wouldn't really recommend it though. I'd either go for the 4790K or the 5820K. One saves money and the other spends a little more for better performance outside of games.

You can OC the i5 the most

I would rather overclock an I7 and get even better results. I may want to do recording in the future or game at 4k So an i5 will not future proof my PC. I just though i am am building a high end rig i may as well go for the best.

You can OC i5 more than i7 ;)

But if you want to build uber PC and you have a lot of money feel free to go i7.
