Is the R9 380 the good mid end bargain at the moment?

I'm currently running a 660, which is starting to get long in the tooth for the games I play (iRacing and Assetto Corsa). It runs iRacing OK on tripple monitors but I can't turn the detail all the way up and as the game is in continuous development I am starting to get frame hang on new cars and track.

 

When I enquired about upgrading to a 960 GTX a while back the general consensus was that it wasn't worth the money upgrading as it wouldn't provide a worthwhile step forward, but from what I've seen the 280 is a fairly big step foward on the 960 in terms of frame rate and in terms of cost they are more or less level.

 

I understand that a 970 and 980 are a big step forward on either of these cards, but in terms of regional price point you can get a 280 for $280 Australian if you shop around and the 970 is still $450-500 so its quite a big price jump.

For triple monitors i would defenitly go with the r9 380 because the higher memory bandwith will help on higher resolutions also i would go for the 4gb version.

 

you could also get an used  290 aftermarket and get much higher fps

I get what you're saying now, a 280X is a faster card than 380 and therefore better value so find one of thos. 3gb memory is nicer than 2gb too.

 

I had a bit of a read around and it seems the 970 is worth spending the extra money on, better power consumption and significantly better performance (therefore far longer before the next upgrade).

 

I found this 970 for 449. I know Galax isn't a particularly good brand, but I have a Galax 660 and its a good card overall.

If you can afford the 970, 290, 290x, or 390, get one, they're all amazing. If not, the 380 is still a pretty nice GPU.

I can afford anything really, its not that I'm trying to pull together the cash, but its just if I get enough use out of it to warrant the purchase as the games I play aren't all that demanding. However I think you're on the right track actually. I wasn't aware the 970 was that much better than a 380, spending that extra $150 might dellay being forced to upgrade in future, I think I'm starting to lean that way actually even if a 970 is well and beyond what I need at the moment.
