Is it worth getting the gtx 970 now. I found I deal where I can get the card for $250. Or should I just wait and get the r9 390 even though it's out of my budget

Depends, what did you need it for? The R9 390 is better (I think) and has double the VRAM

If you can get a 970 for $250 then go for it

I am going to use it as my gaming rig for rendering and editing. The only gaming system that I am going to use

I personally don't know what will be best for rendering, the r9 390 would be better for gaming though

A 970 would be better for editing and rendering because of CUDA

but 390 will be able to cope up with the upcoming games (because of 8gig vRam). 970 however will still work great but man that 3.5gig won't last long.
