:D i was wrong too, i agreed with putting in it the closest slot to the cpu.  Learn something new everyday.  

Different boards have different configurations. 

On my asus maximus vii formula, 1a/1b are the 1st and 3rd from the CPU.

Yes it does for the asus x99 boards. The black slots will not work until all red slots are occupied.

So then stick them in random red slots.
