I had to build a computer on the cheap quick after destroying my laptop after spilling water on it.  I settled for the i3-4160 and 8GB of RAM with the plans to swap the PSU and add a video card later.  After saving up for a while, the refurbed R9 270 dropped to 115 after rebate over the weekend and the EVGA 500B dropped to $35 after rebate (As well as a $10 optical drive - I had to skimp on one during the original build since I splurged a bit out of my budget on the 4160 over the 3258 anniversary).  I picked up both and they should be here Wednesday.  My rig, for reference

ECS B85H3-M3 MicroATX motherboard

i3-4160 Dual Core 3.6GHz

1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM HDD

2 2.5inch 500GB laptop HDDs - used for media storage and backup

8GB 1600MHz DDR3

Gigabyte R9 270

EVGA 500B Power Supply

Some questions:

1) Would it be okay to OC this card with this power supply?  Or should I wait?

2) For my next upgrade should I get a i5 devils canyon, a SSD or 8 more gigs or RAM?

3) Any Ideas of what I can do with cable management?  Obviously the cords are going to be different with the new PSU.

I wouldn't overclock anything just because of the amount of wires there, Cable ties are your best friend for cable management.

No more then 8GB is really useful right now. Perhaps a 6600k and a 1151 motherboard. Your pick, Thermals are better on 1150 socket, I would go for a 4790k personally

Also what are your goals with this PC? It could determine a 4690k to a 4790k. A 128GB SSD would be okay, 250-500 is preferable so you can do things with it >.>

Zap strap all the like cords together. It'll help clean it up a bit.

To answer questions:

My PSU came with the case and didn't come with zip ties.  Haven't put much thought to cable management since it was all temporary to begin with.  No way Im letting my computer run some knock off PSU long term, video card or no.  Hopefully the 500B will come with some ties.  The cables are sleeved too.

My goal is simply to run games at 1080p (edit: max or high settings).  I currently only have a 720p TV, so I'm overkilling right now.  Gonna wait till black friday to upgrade unless some killer deal comes along.  My only goal with the CPU is not to bottleneck the GPU

Also: eventually Im moving to a ATX motherboard and case and using this motherboard and the i3-4160 for a separate home server build.  The MB I will aim for will have RAID support, OC support,  8+ SATA ports and at least two PCI 3 16 slots.  Looking at the ASUS extreme with 10 SATA ports.

Well the cable management fairy didnt visit, but how about the FREE UPGRADE fairy?

Just when I thought things couldn't get better

To review I ordered the 500B power supply.  A Bronze, non-modular power supply.  Newegg sent me, I guess by accident the 1050GS supernova series.  A 1050 WATT FULLY MODULAR GOLD-CERTIFIED POWER SUPPLY.  And I only paid $35 after rebate for the 500B.

Got it all situated and ready for connection

KIMG0004

Everything connected.  Cable management still sucks but better than it was.

KIMG0006

Now to decide on the next upgrade...hmmm....a 1050 watt PSU gives a lot of options B)
