Hey folks.

I was thinking about getting into a new genre of gaming I have not played before... space.

Any recommendations on what games I could try out? A mix between customization of ships exploration and combat would be cool.

Thanks.

Well, there are three major titles at the moment:

Star Citizen

Elite: Dangerous

No Man's Sk~ HAHAHAHAHAHAHAA OH GOD

Lemme put it this way:

Star Citizen is a gorgeous dinner that is still being prepared at the time I'm writing this. Elite: Dangerous is already out, it doesn't have the same list of features SC has, but it's already got the open universe, CQC is about to come out on PC and planetarly landings are coming in December (or whenever "2015 holday season" is). So if you want everything but can wait, go for Star Citizen. If you wanna play your space sim now-now-now-now, get Elite. Or just get both of them, really. Both games are on different ends of the spectrum.

As for NMS, it feels like Little Big Planet had a threesome with Minecraft and original Elite (released 1984), and now it's just sort of there.

Any unknown button should be pressed even number of times.

I'd say Elite: Dangerous, for now at least. It's kinda basic but good, and it's being improved slowly, but constantly.

Star citizen Is one to watch, but I wouldn't recommend investing in it until it gets a full release (which looks like it's not going to be happening for a couple of years at the least)

E:D has a demo version you can try.

Ah cool. I will try that.

Just watched some gameplay videos for both and have to say I am more inclined to go with Star based on the videos.

Star C. is pretty, but the game play is limited, and lacking for the moment, watch some game-play videos, Scott Manley's for instance, and you find out all it has is a Hangar, A battle arena, and a race track. with their associated modes. Another big thing, is the limited numbers of ships you can play with, unless you spend more real life cash (20-300 USD per ship), or earn enough from the 2 modes available to rent other ships for a short period.

Hmm that does not sound great. Would Elite be your recommendation?

It'd certainly be mine, at least today. SC is gonna be a great game but it's still got a long way to go.

Yes.

It will at the very least keep you going until Star Citizen releases (heck, if E:D Keeps adding features it may have everything Star citizen is going to have by the time Star citizen releases).

The only "modern" game in this genre that's actually out right now is Elite: Dangerous. I sure wouldn't recommend investing in Star Citizen until there is at least a more complete product to play.

Star Citizen might be a great game someday, but there's no way to know that at this point. And as a crowd-funded effort (even an astronomically successful one) there's still no guarantee of it actually getting finished.

kinda, there's the Debug Camera, but you cannot control the ship while you are in it (to prevent a situational awareness advantage, seeing around things), It's really intended for pretty screenshots

I am a fan of Elite Dangerous. Played probably more than 100hours since January. I highly recommend it. It is somehow like a sandbox however. You get your ship and you're a nobody. There isn't really a campaign to do.

So what is the aim?

So what is the aim?

There are small missions to do when you are docked at stations. You can do some bounty hunting, mining, trading, exploring. You do what you feel to do really.

I have a Vulture as a combat ship which I use in combats areas. I gain combat credits to upgrade my ships or buy new ships. Recently, I got an ASP and I am on the verge of the civilized space and ready to hop out to the Orion Nebula and explore. Should take me 2-3 weeks to reach the nebula. While reaching the nebula, I will discover new planets, objects that will eventually give me credits when I get back.

A lot of people are saying that Elite feels empty. Somehow it is empty because it is so vast. But I don't care. I actually like being able to choose whatever I wanna do.

There is PowerPlay which is somehow a story. There are multiple factions fighting to rule the galaxy. You can decide to help them and choose a faction if you want. You gain credits, of course while helping. I choose not to be part of PowerPlay right now, because I prefer to be more of a freelancer.

I use an X52 Pro, and after it something like an X360 controller or mouse/keyboard feel... not authentic?

This is what I fly at the moment btw

A friend of mine runs a triple monitor setup for Elite and yet refuses to get a HOTAS because she's more comfortable with the keyboard. It really comes down to what you're used to. Plus with the release of E:D on XB1 the gamepad control scheme was revamped somewhat, but don't quote me on that.

So what is the aim?

My three main goals for the moment are:

- Journey to Sagittarius A* (center of the Milky Way, essentially)

- Finding and claiming first discovery on an O-type star system

- Building a bumper car ship (Imp. Clipper with A7 Prismatic shields)

@spookyneo What's your CMDR tag?

Man, its actually making me want to play it really bad now. Still at work unfortunately.

I am going to give it a go with a 360 pad and see how that feels. More than likely will end up getting a stick but not that expensive. Was thinking http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001DMUCAC?colid=2C4N957TWVRJ0&coliid=I30I5VH2EIW218&ref_=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl
