I can't seem to get through my friends head that buying a GTX 980ti with a 720p monitor is a bad idea can you explain to him why it is a bad idea so I can show him this post?

Even with a 144hz monitor thats 720p (doesent exist) he would make out the monitors refresh rate in every single game on the face of the planet at ultra settings. I get like 120 fps in every game at 1080p maxed out with a 980ti let alone at 720p.

Look up 980ti 720p benchmarks on google, don't find anything, I think that should be more than enough to show how ridiculous that is.

would make much more since for him to buy a 980 and use the extra to upgrade to a 1440p monitor that way he gets 2 upgrades and can utilize both of them.

He should get 2 cards to run minecraft at 50+ FPS, with a single one he will only get 40-45 FPS at best !

Dude... my friend runs SLI 980s for a 1600x900 monitor. His reasoning is "a lot of my games gain fps from SLI"... the fact that one 980 will get well above his refresh rate maxed out on all of his games doesn't affect his decision. If he really wants a 980 Ti, he'll probably get a 980 Ti... and you can only hope that eventually he will get a better monitor (1440P perhaps) to make use of its power.

Yeah I guess, but I'd like to think that when I was a kid I would know how OP that gpu would be for that resolution. Not that there really was an equivalent gpu then.

For the price of a 980 Ti you could get a GTX 970 and a 1440P monitor... hell, you could almost get a 980 and 1440P monitor.

Nvidia card performance scales better at lower resolutions, so maybe its not that bad of a purchase. Your friend won't have to upgrade in forever.

720p is beyond Stonage.

70% of the 980Ti´s power would be wasted into hot air.
