Since when has new gpus required new mobos?

Pascal is going to be using NVLink instead of PCIe.

Wait even more proprietary stuff? I am guessing current PCIE 16X is too slow.

Pascal is going to be using NVLink instead of PCIe.

 

 

As far as I know, it is support for NVLink, rather than using NVLink only. Everywhere I look mentions support for it, but nowhere mentions the replacement of connectors that are compatible with current ones. 

 

EDIT: Seems to be an interlink and communication (between cards) technology, rather than a connector in itself. It would be a bizarre move for Nvidia to suddenly require a new connector without lots of prior warning, in particular with Skylake coming around now.

I may be wrong but this kind of stuff sounds like Big Pascal / Quadro / Tesla type stuff. Not sure if consumer cards will be NVLink just yet.

I thought it was a server level technology anyway. It'll be in the cores but probably not on consumer boards.

From what I've seen Pascal will probably still be PCIe 3.0 then the generation after that will be PCIe 4.0 (<4.0 cards will work on 4.0 connectors but 4.0 cards wont work on <4.0 boards).

It's being implemented in servers and supercomputers. It provides massive amounts of bandwidth inbetween cards.

It's yet to be fully established what NVLink is, but it seems to be an interlink technology, rather than a connector. I'd bet that they will work with current gen PCIe connectors (so, your board would work), but I can't be sure. 

 

We'll have to wait and see. Nvidia will say something prior to the launch if it requires a new connector, or everyone's going to have to buy a new board with their GPU.

Just read through the Whitepapers for NVLink, currently in the timeframe up towards Volta (after Pascal) NVLink will be limited to inter-GPU communications going through a "Switch" connected to the CPU, which will still likely be PCI-Express 3 / 4.

 

NVLink seems to only be limited for highly intense GPU Compute anyways, in otherwords these huge freaking "Super Computers" that can produce multiples of Petaflops (Nvidia and IBM are partnering to build a 300 Petaflop Super Computer with Volta by the looks of it).

 

In other words, don't worry about it, it won't concern us consumers / gamers.
