No, every device that is capable of making it's own decisions in the future will most likely have a killswitch.

Unless we are counting nuclear war. Then yes, it is inevitable.

Yes - very very soon. The USN are currently testing new drones which are completely independent and carrier based. Remote UAV's have already killed between 4000-6000 civilians throughout the Middle East and Africa yet because JSOC report directly to the president, they have little oversight unlike the navy or air force.

I think with all these fears I don't think Skynet-equivilant if all the tin-foil hat people protest it, I don't think our scientists are such dumbasses they wouldn't know how to control such things

Sometimes it's not about scientist/engineers. It's about who uses it. Technology is always neutral. So to the OP, I'd say we're creating tools to kill ourselves. But ultimately, it will always be the end user that does the killing, no matter how autonomous the weapon/tech is. Like you said, scientists aren't dumbasses so there will be safeguards implemented to those autonomous actions.

Actually the popular theory is that by 2045 we will have reached a technology singularity.  This would be a point that we can't predict or even fathom what life will be like afterward because technology will be so far advanced that humans and technology will effectively be one.  There is actually a really interesting series by Bryan Singer called H+ that you can watch on YouTube that deals with a lot of this.

The big thing about the singularity is that by that point, humans can effectively achieve an immortal conscience and achieve a state called superintelligence, a state in the human mind where all information can freely flow through ever person who is connected to the network.  The global network will, in turn, help to moderate bodily function, troubleshoot sickness, and even give advanced warning of any illness or disease through gene sequencing and monitoring.

Although I tend to agree with Stephen Hawking on this one, if we, as a race, cannot conceptualize the idea of what life past a singularity would be like, then the singularity would never be approachable as we will continue to degrade the race to a point where a singularity like conscience event would be more likely to occur in machine than in man.

Still a very interesting conversation though.

I also forgot to mention the rate we're digging up Africa and South East Asia for minerals to build these things and then dumping it all in Ghana because it's cheaper to throw it there than actually recycle it.

This is one of my main concerns too, electronic waste.

We own more and more different types of electronics these days and they only have a certain shelf life to us, most people can't go a year without upgrading their equipment, some even less.

There is so much that could be done to reduce all this, those dumping grounds in parts of Africa are sickening.

I believe it's nearly impossible to develop AI that can actually think for itself. So that it will see humans as suppressors and start killing us.

Refer to my post about the singularity.  That's why it's called a singularity, it's a point in our existence that is so bizarre and foreign that we can't fathom what life will be like past that point.

After all, in all our history, when someone comes up with a new technology and shows it to people without explanation, the masses always thought of it as magic or conjecture.  It was something we couldn't fathom.  Granted, as we got into the 1800's and on, the masses had a basic understanding of science so it made it easier to reveal new technology without getting burned at the stake, but I think you can catch my drift.

Tech has been aiding us in becoming more efficient in our methodology of slaughtering other humans. Will it go rogue and kill us of its own free will? No, because not even the government is that incredulously stupid. Will it further the killing of millions? If history is any indication, oh hell yes. Count on it.
