75% Workstation / 25% Gamestation

Hi,

I'm currently trying to move up from my current system, but I'm stuck, confused and bamboozled as to which critical components I should be getting.

I'm after a system that will mainly be used as a workstation once I hit University in 2016.
I intend to use multiple programs associated with Adobe Cloud. Which will involve stuff like 2D and 3D rendering.
Use multiple monitors (max 2) probably 27-32 Inch each, plus a Cintiq 13 HD.

I'm certain with pretty much every component except the:
-Graphics Card
-Cpu
-Motherboard
-Ram
(No budget, but not overkill)

wish to also use it to game in my downtime -Mainly games like SWTOR or LOL-
So I want to be able to have a system that can play games adamantly, whilst also not compromising on the workstation components.

Any help is welcomed.
Thanks for your time.

Should state your budget and location. Also do you need monitors?

I made a build based on a rough guess of things,

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor  ($368.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($99.00 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI X99S SLI Plus ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard  ($195.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($124.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($71.49 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($52.49 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card  ($169.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Fractal Design Define R5 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($99.99 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: XFX XTR 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($109.99 @ Amazon)

Depending on how intensive your work is a 5820k would be great, and with the cooler you could overclock it to 4ghz.

Went with a simple ssd and hdd storage.

As for the graphics card, this right here was a rough guess. If the programs you use rely more on cpu power and since gaming isn't a priority a simple gpu will suffice, although if your work also uses or benefits from gpu power you could get a gtx 970.

Will make a z97 variation

If your work benefits also from more graphics card power then I made a fair compromise with a 4790k and a gtx 970*, although if graphics power doesn't matter you could go with the 960.

Thanks! My budgets around $2000-$3000, Including all the peripherals.

Could you explain what difference a Z97 makes?

Thanks for the help Inception9269.

Could you explain what difference a Z97 makes?

Thanks for the help Inception9269.

Where are you from?

Z97 is the current haswell refresh consumer CPUs, X99 is the current Haswell-E enthusiast CPUs. The enthusiast CPUs offer more cores (6 in the 5820K and 5930K then 8 cores in the 5960X) as well as use of DDR4 ram instead of DDR3 which is still used in Z97. The X99 platform in general costs more than the Z97 platform but is more powerful.

What is your major going to be?

The cpu should definitely be strong for your work. the cooler will give room to overclock the cpu to 4ghz if you want.

As for the graphics card, since it's going to be only partially used for gaming a 970 should be enough. People are suggesting you get 980ti's but in australia they're over 1000. And regular 980's are also really expensive.

the case is good, spacious, and quiet.

Went with a power supply that would allow room to upgrade if you ever want to, such as throwing in a second 970 perhaps.

added a wifi adapter in case you don't have access to a wired connection, if you do then you can drop that part.

Went with two 1920 x 1080p monitors

Thanks a load guys, This is super helpful. :) I'll let you know on what I decide.
Edit: I quickly put together a build using similar parts. I'm willing to spend more to make it more aesthetically pleasing. I'm going for a kind of majority white on black theme.
