I'd say more of an upgrade than an update.

EDIT: Nope its a new operating system as of now Microsoft Windows is on NT Version 10.0.10240 instead of the 6.X (NT versions for Windows 7 up to Windows 8.1).

I don't think it will reset the system though, it might do what windows does when you upgrade the operating system by putting everything in the windows.old or something similar folder.

All your personal data will be there but you will most likely have to re-install all your programs ect.

It will be an in-place upgrade unless doing a fresh install, so all programs and documents will be kept.

Ok cause yeah got like 500GB worth of steam games and stuff as i have all my college work backed up but not my games and programs as there way to big to put on anything and with a crappy download speed would take weeks to download them all.

I'd say it's more of an upgrade rather than an update. Nonetheless, all your data should be kept during the upgrade process.

Try and back up your stuff if you can, and if that's not an option, at least take the really important stuff.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Its a whole new operating system, It transfers all files that you have on your laptop/pc, You will not lose anything, Its a fairly large update, let it install over night if you have slow speeds, Just remember to update all your drivers to 10

I'd also recommend this as we never know what can go wrong while installing a new operating system. Even if your installation goes without any problems you'll end up with a back up of your sensitive data which is recommended anyway.  :)

It's not an update at all, it's being released as an update right now but you'll see it on store shelves in 2-3 weeks.

It's a WHOLE NEW OS!!
