The OP is only asking about adding a second monitor to do work on, not to game on both. So the answer to that question is it will not change anything. Running the desktop puts like, 1% load on the GPU, if even that much lol.

hey linus community I'm just wondering if my single gtx 980 ( which is overclocked ) could run 2 4k monitors as I would like to buy a second one. I'd only be using one of them for gaming and the other one will only be used for basic programs like chrome. But if I have this second monitor running while I'm gaming, am I going to lose a lot of performance?

I think you will be fine as long as you game on one, even tho the 980 isn't really THAT good with 4k but yeah I think you'll be fine

barely?? so my 75fps at 4k on bf hardline all ultra, or 65fps in gta v all ultra at 4k is barely handling it with my 980ti?!?!? damn best go buy 4 titans just so i can get even more pointless frames above my 60hz refresh rate!!

I doubt you are getting 65 FPS ultra everything. Even advanced setting with no aa and stuff? Yeah no.

Hardline is not very GPU intensive!

A single 980 can power 2 4k monitors. BUT you'll want to use both for gaming eventually. THE PC GAMING MONEY TRAP MY FRIEND. -edit as misread-

I doubt you are getting 65 FPS ultra everything. Even advanced setting with no aa and stuff? Yeah no.

No advanced settings and no AA. thats still ultra settings :) and the advanced settings have almost 0 visual impact.. 

 

either way id still not call the "barely"...
