I have a younger sister, but we haven't lived together for 12 years, and she lives about 800km from where I live.

So, we don't really get to see eachother much.

That's kinda sad imo :(

I wouldn't really say so. We are both adults, and we both have families to take care of.

Usually, I see her when my mom and dad visits her. Then we have a small familie reunion,

Family is something that I grew up to cherish as much as I can, if I don't see my uncles and aunts at least once every week i'd go nuts and most of them live quite away from my place.

I have an older half sister but I didn't spent the predominance of my childhood in the same building as her (I was effectively an only child - something I am grateful for). We are very competitive, we might even hate each other I'm still not sure about that. I think it will become crystal clear when our parents pass on and we have to work through the aftermath together. She is currently further ahead than I am in terms of career by a truly massive amount and we don't speak a great deal these days.

What else to say about her... not much else that I want to put down here really.

A little sister who is 2 years younger than me. We don't really mind each other, but don't really go too well together either.

She is responsible for breaking most (of not all) of the electronics that have gotten broken, and I am the "free 24/7 tech support" of the family.

She goes to a special school (because she didn't go to school normally for one whole year due to panic attacks) in another town, and lives there, occasionally comes for a visit here.

And I was responsible for beating her up every day when we were little kids. I was a psycho back then, and enjoyed her crying... I am not proud of my childhood, at all. Today though, it's mostly trading snarky comments.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

Well, that's pretty much the opposite of what I grew up with.

The first time I saw my grandparents on my fathers side, I was 8 years old.

When I meet my mothers parents, I was 10 years old.

And I didn't meet my aunt and uncle before I was 12 years old.

I am also aware of a lot of family, that i haven't meet at all.

My parents mentality was pretty much, that family was something forced on you, and you aren't bound to them in any objective way.

The bond you have to your family members is entirely in your head.

For example, my parents didn't even their grandchild (my daughter) untill she was 3 years old.

I guess that mentality is also part of the reason why my parents threw me out when I was 15.

I can't imagine myself ever growing up the same way as I am right now if I had spent my childhood like this. Honestly if I were you i'd try to teach my child that family is something you should always cherish because when something is wrong, they will be the ones to come to help you at first, not your friends(on most cases).

But that's what I'd do, i'd try to not let my child get the same childhood as you did.

It's a good incentive, should be done a lot more these days in my opinion. It's exactly what happened to me; I failed at school and was told that I could choose to do higher education (impossible at the time), get a job and support myself or to literally get the fuck out.

I don't blame you. I'm not saying that the way my parent raised me is the right way, but it did teach me to stand on my own and don't rely on family.

I guess my daughter will get raised in the middle of the two of us. My wife is as baffled by my parents as you seem to be.

I was never really bad at academics, and I did (and still do) resonable in school.

However, I was in the beginning of a growing drug addiction. My parents just gave me a choice: Either I would quit doing drugs or I should walk out the door and never come back,

Being the stuborn bastard that I am, I chose the later option. I didn't see my parents untill 10 years later (although, I didn't talk to them before that).

'Till this day I don't blame them for doing what they did. I know it was a hard choice, but it would have been much harder having me around.
