Overclocking AMD R9 R390X, is it worth it?

Is overlocking even practical for this card? The power consumption and marginal improvement are turns offs. I'm planning on getting the Gigabyte version of this card which is voltage locked so it can't be overclocked.  The Gigabyte card is surprisingly only $460 in my country and I bet that the MSI is a lot more expensive.

In comparison, my other option for a video card is the Gigabyte GTX 970 Windforce Gaming Edition which is $440.

I am building my first gaming rig and I almost have half of the money I need to buy the parts. There's still much time for me to change my build as new things get released and old things get cheaper.

My build:

i5 4690K (overclocked to 4.5 GHz)

Cooler Master Hyper Evo 212X

Gigabyte Gaming 5 Z97 Mobo

Gigabyte GTX 970 or Gigabyte R9 390X

16GB of Ram (Any 1600 MHz within my budget)

256GB SSD (Samsung Evo 850)

2TB HD (2 x 1TB WD BLUE)

SeaSonic M12II-750 EVO

i5 4670k | Noctua NH0-U12S | Asus Z97M Plus | Kingston HyperX Fury 8gb | Palit GTX 980 Ti Super Jetstream 6G | Samsung 850 EVO 250gb

WD Caviar Blue 1tb | Seasonic M12II 850W | Fractal Design Define R5 | Dell U3014 1600p 30" 60Hz

Corsair K65 | Razer Orochi | Bose QuietComfort 15 | Creative SBS A350 2.1

If you're considering the volt locked piece of shit( :P ) , I'd much rather you get the 970. Rather then complaining about the 390x being voltage locked.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

the 390x will outperform that 970 by miles for only $20 more

I hope I'm not asking a redundant question: the 390X will still trail an immensely overclocked GTX 970?

I won't be complaining about the 390X if it's overclock isn't worth it to begin with. I'd be happy with the Gigabyte since it suits my needs and it's so affordable

Depends of the chip you get. Silicon lottery is a thing. Whether the 390x is a good overclocker will depend on silicon lottery. I don't get how is the 390x a bad overclocker in the article you linked. An 80mhz overclocked shows a 5~10% increase in fps. Was it bad just because it didn't catch up to the 980?

The 970 only goes uo to about 1520-1550 MHz. The 390X at stock will be matched, but if you OC the 390x the 970 gets left in the dust

That's true but the 8GB of VRAM will certainly help in 1440p.

Good point, I should look and compare into individual GPU reviews. :)
