I could suggest upping the PSU to a 750W, 650W would be cutting it close, but its fine... i think.

Get 2 390Xs and a 800W PSU for overclocking. Radeon cards scale better in Crossfire and also have more than double the VRAM.

7gb is still more than enough for one monitor

with the 970s he's getting 3.5, 2 cards DO NOT DOUBLE the VRAM.

If you won't OC then get the i7 4790 non k version. And I'd rather spend on a single 980ti than on two 970s as vRam will be limited and not all games are optimised for SLI.

how long do you think this will last (i plan to play every* game on ultra*)

i won't do any OC on cpu or gpu.

If I were you I'd get 1 980Ti, not 2 970's in SLI, because 1 980Ti will perform the same, but you'll have less noise/heat and avoid potential issues with SLI.

Also if you plan on doing no overclocking what so ever, why not get a non -k sku CPU, and get a H97 mother board? That will save you some money and you'll get the same benefits, Z97 is for overclocking mainly, and if you get a single 980Ti you wont need the Z97 for SLI either. You could also save money on a good air cooler because you wont be overclocking

i may oc in the future

You clearly said I won't OC in the original post, please make it clear that you will OC in the future in the post so that users don't get confused.

Ram doesn't stack when in SLI.

yet nobody has answered the question: how long do you think it will last

Games depend on the GPU, not CPU so you are fine with an i5 for a long time. The i5 2500K is still among the best gaming CPUs.

That's a answer that can only be answered by you, I still have a computer with a gt 210 that I consider to be sufficient. As a rough guess I expect it to run games around high settings for some good time (e.g 3-4 years), but you will run into vRam issues as the 970 has 3.5 GB only eventually.

Exactly. This is why getting a single more powerful card (980 TI/Fury X) or 390X CF is better.

Yeah that's better, a 980Ti will let you play ever game on ultra for a decently long while, especially seeing as you're using a 1080p monitor, and you'll get a good use of the 144Hz on it because the 980Ti will be able to deliver that kind of performance.

Then in the future you can still do some nice overclocking.

A word of caution though, a much higher % of people using the Gigabyte G1 980Ti have complained about loud coil whine then other versions of the 980Ti. Personally mine has been perfect for me, and I don't get any coil whine, but it's something to keep in mind, because some retailers wont even let you return it if it has bad coil whine. So you can either take the risk, or pick out another cooler design for the 980Ti
