How about an engine thread?

JaeDee884

About time for something aviation based :)

Rolls-Royce Griffon, 36.7L V12, SOHC 48valve producing around 2,000bhp depending on engine model but some are around 2,500bhp

Rod Hadfield put the Rolls Royce Merlin into a 55 Chev, not exactly practical but it was an amazing engineering exercise.

Desktop - Custom watercooled R4E/i7 3930k/GTX 780 SLI/32gb 2400mhz DDR3/Xonar STX/OCZ V4 256gb RAID 0/24tb RAID 5

Laptop - Clevo P370EM - i7 3630QM/GTX 680M SLI/8gb 1866mhz DDR3/840 pro 256gb RAID 0/750gb mechanical

Indeed, I read about it in street machine years ago, before I realised I didn't care enough about cars to spend $100/month buying magazines.

As for my nomination of favourite engine, the one powering this is light, absurdly power productive and most importantly, mine. :D

It may be small but it is still a great little engine. Rover K Series 1.4L. 102BHP out of something that small. In a MG ZR it's a fantastic car to drive.

I like the Merlin better, but for A/C engines the P&W r-2800 is the best

because its in my favorite plane.

My beast of an engine:

1.4L TSI 4 pot 16v, turbocharged & supercharged. 180BHP = Good!

That tied to a seven speed DSG box = not so good!

Totally agree. It's an epic gearbox, but there are times where a manual would be some much more fun!

I take it that you are referring to me for the source? Yeah about that. I seem to be having a spot of difficulty in finding a 100% reliable source seen as that rover have no official website anymore. I have linked two sources but they are only word of mouth on forums and wiki (although the wiki source is very in depth). If forums are anything to go by, the people generally tend to know their stuff. Especially since it is a MG/Rover forum telling you that the same engine in a Rover 25 only has 85PS due to throttle body only opening half way and if you swap it out for a MG throttle body you can take advantage of the extra 20PS knocking it up to 103PS.

It's the best I can do.

I'd have to disagree with you, they may be powerful for their size but they're one of the worst engines I've ever encounted

Sweet, if they sound pretty nice when starting up cold, sounds like they are going to destroy themselves

Why? BTW I'm not disagreeing with you. I have only had the car (2003) about a year and have had no problems with it. It only cost me €950 as well so I am in love with the thing. Great car to drive. It is horrible to live with but still, what a car to drive.  :)

The amount of times I've had to f**k about with them in Rover 25, 45, 75 and their MG variants is insane, I'd consider you extremely lucky.

I don't know much about engines, but my dad has an '04 Ram 2500 and an '02 GMC Sierra, the first is pushing 450000km and the second is at 550000km, both still purr when they start up.
