I updated my my laptop from 8 to 8.1 I just did this because I barely use it. I logged on to the laptop and saw there was no window 10 redeem icon. How could I get it. The reason I wanted to get the windows 10 is because I want to use the key on my desktop PC if I can even do that.

Have you downloaded and installed all updates for Windows 8.1? The free upgrade offer comes through Windows Updates.

Also, the Windows 10 key will be tied to your hardware, you will not be able to use it on your desktop. Does your desktop not already have Windows 7 or 8.1 on it?

When you install the update to get the W10 upgrade, it firstly checks if your computer can handle W10, and it checks it at 8PM, or you can help it a hand

First go to C:\Windows\System32 and see if there is a folder called GWX in there with a couple of files in, and programs with the upgrade logo.

If there is, open task scheduler and search for Microsoft>Windows>GWXTrigger, there should be 1 task in it, run that.

If it works, the icon will appear straight away, might take a while before it completes.

You can continue to use the Windows 10 Technical Preview for the foreseeable future, for free. You'll just have to put up with frequent beta test updates. Just do that until you can save up and buy Windows :)

If you buy Windows 10, you'll get a Product Key with your purchase. You should be able to Activate the TP with that key. There may be specific steps involved - we won't know until after Retail Launch hits, but it shouldn't be difficult.
