Buy the AIO cooler and extra memory later.

Hey, I'm currently deciding on which GPU to buy. The two I have in mind are the R9 390X and the GTX 980 but I'm not sure which one :/.

Which GPU should I buy and which variant?(example being the MSI R9 390X or the Sapphire Radeon R9 390X)

Thanks ALOT!

So you're basically saying you could afford an R9 Fury? I would wait to see if the Fury Nano is reasonably priced. I like the 390X over the 980 though because it is $50 cheaper and has enought VRAM to never have to worry, and can comptete with the 980 performance wise fairly well. Unfortunately if you go 980, Fury, or Fury Nano you'll be stuck with 4GB but that should still be adequate for 1440p and below for quite some time.

honestly just wait and save an additional 100$ and get a 980ti, your in a price range that for a little more you can get much more performance, as the 980 has a higher clock speed for less heat, with less v ram, however most titles aren't going to use 8gb of v ram that the 390x has. so with a 980 ti which is about 650, you'll get 6gb of ram, a balance between them, with cooler temps, and higher speeds.

Its a Championship not a Belt!

This. Also lookout for SALES because maybe you can get a 980 Ti for less. :) Even with just only 6GB of VRAM, the 980 Ti still beats the 390X at 4K.

Ok, so according to the posts above, I should go for a R9 Fury or the 980Ti if I save the money.

So choosing between the both, which will you recommend?

I'd say the R9 Fury as you will notice only a marginal increase in perfomance with hte 980 Ti and the custom AIB designs may go above 700 USD. My advice would be get the Fury - It's High Bandwith memory beats GDDR5 4 to 1 for the most part with the Fury X beating the Titan X @ 4K.

Ok, so should I save for the 980Ti or just get the R9 Fury?

Depends. If you want it now, get the Fury, if you desperately want Nvidia, get the 980 Ti.

You are getting worse price:performance with the fury tho.

Worse Price to Performance with the Fury? Well I'll save for the 980Ti!

Ops, I meant with the 980 Ti. Sorry. Fury will give you better price to performance as with any AMD GPU really.

Unless you consider overclocking... Because some of the extreme 980s can get close to the fury x overclock to overclock, and basically all of them currently blow the socks off of the fury regular after OC.

(Mind you we obviously expect eventually we will see better overclocking from the fury x and it's line, but it hasn't happened yet.)
