Oh god, Bought wrong 8.1 ?

Go to solution Solved by Speedbird,

Oh good

Why is it 4.9GB then i thaught it was 20 ?

One word: compression. The install archive is heavily compressed, and will take up about 20GB once the archive has been extracted and the features and updates are applied.

I have just bought windows 8.1 for my new pc build and i'm pretty sure i accidentally just bought the update as its only 4.9GB

Have a look: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Windows-8-1-Full-Version/dp/B00FRAE7MU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437679563&sr=8-1&keywords=windows+8.1

I hope i bought the right one  :(

Why Is it windows 10 not 9?

because 7 ate 9
(say it)

Only 4.9GB? That's huge for a Windows download! Full version for sure. And the size of the download would not determine if its upgrade or full, the installer will take both types of product keys. You will only see if it doesn't activate. However I believe there are no 'Upgrade' editions of 8.1, only for 8. You should be fine.

There's still updates, but I think you expected them anyway. Also, where on earth is a 4.9GB download provided for Windows 8.1? The ISOs I link are all around 4GB

I took it from a disk ? It's the 64 bit edition

I literally just formatted the usb drive and then put the files from the disk on it ?

Quote posts, please. What disk did you take it from? Did your copy ship with one? I thought they didn't.

4.9GB is fine. When you install Windows, Windows setup will extract files, and generate a bunch of others.

Once installed it will be ~20GB.

The small difference in size can be your ISO maker software how it worked in replicating the DVD disk, and the size varies based on local regions Windows comes by default (system languages).

Once you'll install Windows 8.1, you'll see everything is fine.
