XBOX controller power draw?

looking at getting a usb hub to plug controllers into my home theater setup. Some hubs only have a certain mah capacity. long story short does anyone know what the power usage of an xbox controller is?

The controller itself or a wireless dongle? The (wireless) controller is powered by two AA batteries, so the wired version will have negligible power draw.

I certainly hope so!

 

The controller itself is around 2.5w (5v @ 480mah) This is the Xbox One controller. The 360 controller is 450Mah.

 

Standard USB 2.0 is 500Mah per port, though most USB ports on the motherboard can give 1A - 2A without trouble, so you should be fine.

I can't imagine much more than 2 watts... It runs for quite a while on 2 AA batteries...

It's fine. If it was an item that pulled a lot of amps then it would fry it. Like a coffee pot maker or hot pad. Yes they have USB versions of it and yes they burn it out.

5V 480mA for the XB1 controller (well that's what it says inside anyway). So... Work that out and you're good to go :P

Power draw is measured in Amps, Volts is the force of the current, Volts x Amps = Watts

Now we know USB is 5V, the most the Xbox pad can be 0.3A as they work on a Pi and it can support 0.3A per USB port maximum.

So 5V x 0.3W = 1.5W

So how does it work on a Pi then? I was told by a Pi dev that it supports 1.2A in total across all 4 ports as a hard maximum (its actually 1A until you add a line to the boot config for the extra 0.2A).

Not arguing, I just made an assumption based on the best evidence I had. If I was wrong then I was wrong, sue me :P

I think I know where my mistake is, I assumed it was 1.2 / 4 ports but from reading around its more like how PCIE lanes works, theres 1.2A available and one device can take it all if it needs to leaving the other 3 with nothing left.

So yeah, my mistake. "Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups"
