Replacing a 10 year old PC

My brother is going to collage next year and he'll need a 3D / video / photo editing rig.

 

Current rig:

Pentium 4 630 (OC to 3.6 GHz)

Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT 256Mb DDR2

1Gb DDR1

Broken ASUS P5GPL-X motherboard (one dead DIMM)

 

Budget:

500-700€ (because we'll be spending a lot for a monitor for me)

Upgrade of a gpu or a cpu in 1 year. (Not included in budget)

 

I don't need a case, a power supply, a monitor or windows. (win 10 is free)

I'll be buying at Hardwareversand with idealo.de discounts.

 

Plan A

Skylake i3/Pentium, Z170 mobo, R9 390 + CPU upgrade in 1 year (i'll take the 390 and give him 280X untill CPU Upgrade)

 

Plan B

Skylake i7, Z170 mobo, + Add a GPU in 1 year 6Gb+

 

Plan C

Hashwell i7, Z97 mobo, DDR3 + add a GPU sooner.

 

Questions:

DDR4 vs DDR3 (Worth the extra price?) 

What prices do you think will drop more? Skylake or R9 390?

War thunder

 

I have experience with pc building but I don't know what to do for this pc to last at least 5 years.

i definitly would wait for skylake and see how it performs, i guess haswell will then drop dramatically in price. For CAD you need a good cpu so 4cores will be the way to go, gpu is more for gaming.

No, The budget is so low because of the monitor. He'll get the VG248QE (It's my current) instead of his HP L1906 and We'll buy a BenQ GW2765HT for me. I do tons of video and photo editing and we need a color accurate and 1440p monitor. (Pls don't judge me for the monitor decision). I'm stupid i know.

GPU wil help a lot with video rendering (Premiere pro supports OpenCL) and photo editing.

Build i want to end up with is:

i7 skylake (I guess hashwell could do but i donno)

I really want it to preform good in like 5 years time so i might invest in DDR4 but it's not cheap now and i don't wanna pay for something that's not going to make a big difference. I know how it is with DDR4 vs DDR3 now.

 

So do you think it's worth paying for the i3 extra and with GPU prices droping until next generation just so i can have something graphicaly capable now?

In the first post i said i can buy i3 and a good graphics and upgrade my cpu next year. He'll go to collage next year. That way i can wait for the 2nd part of skylake release so he can get a better CPU. The build you posted would cost between 1000 and 1100€ here. The upgrade is not in the budget either so it's a weak CPU + good graphics and then upgrade the cpu (better in cpu on the end) or good cpu now and no graphics (if he did with gt 8500 till now he can do IGP till collage) and than buy a gtx 980 or even a 980Ti next year.

OK I did some sniffing around and I think I'll stick to Plan B. I expected other skylake-S CPU in Q1 2016 but there will only be laptop CPUs. i7 6700K looks like a good choice to me. I still don't know if i should take DDR 4 or settle with DDR 3.  :unsure:

OK so with the skylake prices setting down a bit in the last week or so I have been rethinking again.

 

hashwell: So for the sake of usb 3.1, m.2, better audio... i've decidet not to take hashwell although it is way cheaper here.

 

Skylake: Still rather expensive and the big problem and it's advantage is that it's got integrated graphics so i can wait with the graphics card and buy the monitor, but it also means it's in a lack of rear I/O ports.

 

Hashwell-E: With hashwell-E i would gain more ports, 2 more cores and quad channel memory support for 130€ more. The problem is that i would have to buy a graphics card meaning i'll have to run on a 1280x1024 monitor.  :wacko: That is until i get the money to buy one.

 

Price comparison is based on everything bought for both configuration (system with graphics card and monitor).

quad channel you probably wont notice that much diffrence anyway i suspect. and extra cores arent always as good they look

Based on the cinebench in cinema 4D the difference doesn't look negligible. I hope you know a am talking about a rendering computer primarily.

if your rendering sure. but four core is not exactly sluggish these days. and haswell-e aint cheap still.

Oh my gawd! Anything is better you can get a Athlon X4 860K and a 750Ti easy and it will outperform that old junk machine!

Don't insoult the trusty Pentium 4 3,6 GHz.  It runs linux just nicely for general browsing, office, pdf... It isn't exacly good for anything else though

Pentium 4 is fine but Athlon X4 860K is a huge upgrade for cheap!
