Is the I5 4440 good enough for gaming? Will it bottle something like the gtx 970, r9 390, or the 390x?

Any 4th Gen Intel i5 (Desktop version ofcourse) will not bottleneck any of the GPUs you mentioned. Get any of them especially if they are on sale, they will be great for gaming! :)

No bottleneck. You can try googling the games you want to play "game name cpu benchmark" or watch them on YouTube. As you can see the previous gen 3470 is performing great.

Your CPU would fit somewhere close the 3570K and 9590. According to the article no overclocks have been done to the CPUs.

NO YOU NEED AN I7 5820K FOR GAMING CUZ UR I5 WILL PLAY GAMEZ AT 2FPS WITH THE COOLER ON FIRE.

Actually in all seriousness, that i5 will be absolutely fine, most newer i5's (sandy bridge and up i believe.) with a decent clockspeed can handle a beefier GPU just fine (GTX 780,970,390X,280X CF etc for example)
