There should be somewhere in the house where there's a bunch of Ethernet outlets or cables in the same place, those are your source and you should connect them to a router or switch.

Then you can just plug anything into the Ethernet outlets in the rest of the house and it'll work just the same as plugging it directly into the router.

Unless you're talking about actually installing and wiring the outlets?

Way to vague of a question.   Are they ethernet or POTS?   Did they run to a central box anywhere?

Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly; the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly.

in my house all the ethernet cables come to a closet. From there I just plug the data cable from outside the house into the modem and the respective Ethernets into said ports in the closet.

If you need to run new cable hire a guy. They have tools that make it much easier.

Is there a bunch of RJ45 (Ethernet) sockets in the box?

Those you plug into a router, or a switch if your router doesn't have enough ports.

mine is much more complicated than that we have some 30 cables all jumbled in there blocked my view of everything but now i get what you mean. ill put the modem there put a switch there and from there plug all the cables into the switch and into the wall to create a connection for the ones in the wall and ill run the router from the wall somewhere closer to the center of the house since my closet thing in in a corner of the house

ya. that will work. but what i suggest, if you just have a modem and not a modem-router, is to put the router in the closet and then run a line from the router to the switch. then put an access point in the middle of your house. routers translate modem information and give you your dhcp lease. this is why you want it directly after your modem. an access point is what it sounds like, it is you wifi. it does not have router capabilities. often you will find routers with access points or your isp may give you a modem-router-access point. my isp only gives me a modem. so my net work looks like this. I do have a 5960 swtich but I have not figured out how to make it work how i want as i have not formally sat down to do this but if i were to get it up an running it would replace the extreme and i would only use one extreme as an access point.

modem -> PF Sense box (router) -> apple airport extreme (switch) -> airport extreme (switch/access point)

if you have a mess of cable in your closet, you can find a wall port or some sort of device that will allow you to shorten all the cable and make everything neat. I dont know what that device would be called and I could not find it in a google search but i have seen it before. something like this.
