I have recently built myself a decently powerful PC (gtx 970), and I am now looking to have a monitor in addition to my current 1080p PLS monitor.  What should I choose? I do both photo/video editing, as well as a fair amount of gaming.  I would really like to have a higher resolution monitor for general use, but I also want to have a high refresh rate to improve my experience in games.  The only monitors out right now that have both are far too expensive($900+ for Swift, Predator, etc), so I need to make the choice between one or the other, preferably within the $300-500 CAD range.

Help me make the decision between 1080p @ 144hz, 4k tn, or the qnix 1440p ips!

I'm currently leaning towards the qnix, as it seems that most owners have managed to overclock it to 90+hz, while maintaining the 1440p resolution.  Please leave a response if you have personal experience with this monitor!

Thanks in advance, Andy.

You have a PLS Panel for decent colour accuracy, so why not try and get a 1440p 144Hz TN Panel?

You could get this one for close to your budget: http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=10141108628

But just keep in mind you obviously wont benefit from it having freesync, it's just the cheapest 27" 1440p/144Hz TN out there it seems.

1080p @144hz for fast paced first person shooters

4K @60Hz for slow paced atmospheric games

Well spoken, friend.

I went from 1080p 60Hz to 1440p 144Hz (Swift) and was honestly not blown away. If you don't play FPS games competitively or feel as if you REALLY need it there is no need to go higher than 60Hz now. I ended up changing my Swift to the PB287Q (4k 60Hz) and feel like it suits me better. I'll add that I also do photo and video editing alongside alot of gaming and the screen is just amazing.

Also, if you feel like 4K is too much for your PC to handle you can always downscale the games you play to 1080p which is almost unnoticable depending on the games you play. Also the PB287Q is really good for a TN-panel, I can recommend it highly. And if you do edit alot aside gaming IT'S WORTH IT. You can fit four 1080p screens pixelwise inside that beast, you have so much room for everything.

All this is my personal opinion of course.

Depends on how deep you are onto those things. If you are like pro level my-life-depends-on editor then IPS is the way to go because of the great color correction. If not the 4k is great for editing as it gives you a big nice workspace. 1080p 144 hz is great for gaming if your PC is beefy enough to reach 144fps but the color is not all that great, as you have another monitor I would consider the setup nice for editing, but if you opt by doing it on only one screen I don't think it will cut it.

The best choice? 1440p 120hz

Personal preference. I'm always going to go higher res over faster fps, but that's my inclination.

agreed, were in the minority these days, but i also prefer resolution over refresh rate. im more than happy plodding along at 4k 60fps.

4k 60 fps is so nice. I used a 1080p 120Hz display for a long time. Don't miss it at all.

Im kind of in the same boat. I have a 980 ti on order and im somewhat torn between 1440p 60hz, 4k 60hz, and 1080p 144hz. although I've almost decided on 1440p or 4k.

Im leaning towards 1440p since I mostly just play for fun, not for bragging rights and its debateable what advantage if any 144hz offers in real world play, and 4k is just too much of a performance hit, although it would almost be worth it to experience games like bioshock infinite, diablo 3 and COD modern warfare at 4k on ultra settings and get 60fps, which is easily doable.

I could always go 4k and keep my 1080p monitor since I wouldn't get much selling it, and use it for games 4k is too much for like witcher 3 or GTA V. 4k monitors are barely more expensive than 1440p.

First world problems.

but do you have any problems when you play games at lower resolution on your 4k display eg. 1080p or 1440p

1440p 144hz is a good trade fps vs resolution and quality. You can max Games and it still runs good. 4k is not intersting at all. It may look good, but you need a ridiculous amount of power to get half good frames.

I always play at 4k! why would I play at less lol. only time I've gamed at a lower res was the first few days of dying light as it was so badly optimised I played at 1440p. it looked fine to me, but bad compared to 4k lol.

I play all games at 4k ultra! only way to game in my eyes lol

I play battlefield 4 and hardline, red orchestra 2, GTA V, killing floor 2, rust umm and many more.

and there's not a single one I can't play at 4k ultra and maintain 60fps on a single 980ti.

bf4/hl all ultra no AA I average 75fps.

gta v all ultra no AA and no advanced graphics I get 65fps average.

killing floor all ultra it's a steady 60fps (I'm fairly sure it's locked).
