Upgrade or new build

Go to solution Solved by sribeast21,

If you have the money, I would definetly build a new pc. Your current pc will run into many problems if you want to watercool. Is there even enough room for a rad?

If you don't know how to build a pc, look at linus's build a better gaming pc on youtube, its very detailed and gets the job done.

Hey guys I'm unsure whether i should build a new computer or just upgrade my components on my current computer (built in 2011). My specs are:

CPU: i5-2500 (not K)

CPU Cooler: Aywun RADI A1-V4 BLACK EDITION

Mobo: intel dp67bg

GPU: Sapphire HD 6950 2GB

PSU: Some generic brand

Case: antec 300

This was my first build and i only realise now at the mistakes i made. Case is too small for the GPU, crap PSU, crap cooler and should have bought K model of CPU. I really want to build a custom water cooled computer (cpu + gpu). I'm unsure whether i should build a new computer or should i just watercool my current computer. I will definitely overclock my gpu once watercooled.

Do you guys reckon watercooling a non-k cpu worth it?

Will i yield better performance only overclocking a GPU?

If i do build a new computer its going to be:

CPU: i5-4670k (watercooled)

GPU: GTX 770 (watercooled)

Mobo: Asrock Extreme 3

Case: switch 810

PSU: Corsair CX 750W

If I upgrade my current computer i will buy a switch 810 with a CX 750 and just watercool cpu and gpu. Would rather just watercool current computer but don't want to do it if i will be better of just buying a new computer.

Thanks for your time. Any input is much appreciated.

If you're going to watercool both your gpu and cpu, you're better off with a new build.

Thanks for your input, i was going to buy a new case(switch 810) and then watercool so room wasn't an issue. I didn't know much when i bought my current computer, after following linus for a couple of years now i know a lot more and feel more confident. It seems i would be better of buying a new system.

Watercooling isn't worth it, even for a K cpu : P

That build is very capable, and unless you find a need for better framerates you can just buy a better case and psu.

Stuff I have I like: Moto G - Superlux HD681 Evo - Monoprice 9927

What are your reasons for not watercooling? I'm seeking a near-silent computer with lower temps.

Utter waste of money - although if you feel like throwing 2-3000$ On a pc, and would find it fun to maintain, sure.

But don't do a custom loop on a 770, At least go 780 before WC'ing.

As well as upgrade your PSU and Motherboard

I do see your point. Removing all watercooling gear in my build and adding a gtx 780 would bring the new total to $1780. Why do u say upgrade my mobo and PSU will they not suit my purpose of gaming?

CX 750 Is a budget psu, and 2000$ Isn't exactly a Budget gaming pc - Get something like a tx 750 v2, Doesn't cost much more really. - If you want something better I'd recommend Seasonic X-850/X-750

Again for the Motherboard, Extreme3 is something you'll find in a 1000$ PC, something like a MPOWER or Z87X-UDH5 Would be better for this kind of budget.

If i was to get a Z87x-UDH5 and a x 750, i would have to drop my water cooling dream (next time). New updates spec list:

CPU: i5 - 4770K ($276)

CPU Cooler: NH-D14 ($95)

GPU: Gigabyte GV-N780OC ($849)

RAM: Corsair Vegence 2x4g 1600MHz ($89)

Mobo: GA-Z87x-UDH5 ($305)

Case: NZXT Switch 810  ($199)

PSU: Seasonic x-750 ($220)

SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 128gb ($150)

This current system above costs $2179, any tweaks to this current system.
