CPU Voltage rapidly changing effecting performance?

Go to solution Solved by Ialyrn,

You need to buy a new motherboard in all honesty, as that motherboard was never originally designed with the FX-8 in mind. Or any of the current FX chips for that matter. It has the AMD 760G chipset, and you really need something more modern on the 990FX chipset for the CPU that you are using. There have been two other people that I know of on this forum running the same chipset and an FX-8 CPU, and have run into stuttering issues while playing intensive games. The 700 series of chipsets where made in 2007, the current line up of FX CPUS where released in 2012. Not to mention it only has a 4+1 power phase design, which is not good enough to run the FX-8 at its full potential. So even though your temps are ok, and everything will read correct within the bios and even in windows in general. The moment you try to do something intensive like gaming, the system will throttle back the CPU based on the increased power draw of the CPU. It has a TDP of 125 watts.

Thank you for that reply. What motherboard would be good to get according to my rig on my profile?

Set it to High Performance and see what happens.

I set windows to High performance and turned off 'cool and quiet' mode in BIOS. This made a small improvement. Still noticeable, but I think a small difference. My cooler will be fine to cool it so it wont thermal throttle.

Will my CPU be damaged from my mobo? or can I just buy a new mobo and switch my CPU into that one?

If the VRM becomes fried(seems like it won't), it could destroy the CPU. You could buy another motherboard for your CPU but you might spend a bit of money.

Ok. It will be cheaper than getting an i5 with a mobo.  Dont get me worried about my VRM getting fried. Its fine.. .-.

So to conclude, GET A NEW MOBO! :D?

Thank you for your help guys

If you dont have much money to spend, then I would suggest this motherboard, It is only £89 on Amazon uk at the moment.

It is a fairly recent addition to the 970 range of AM3+ motherboards, and it has an 8+2 power phase design; so it will run your CPU without issue. If you go for the 990FX based motherboards, the price will take a big leap.

You have 2 choices available to you really. Buy a new motherboard and hold out till 2016 to see what AMD ZEN can do, or swap to intel. Intel at the moment would give you more options for the immediate future. And people here would be more than happy to help you pick out new suitable hardware to replace with. But sticking with your current CPU and ram will not overly effect your gaming performance as much as some would have you believe. I only have an FX-4300, and I can play all the latest AAA titles including GTA v, Farcry 4, project cars, F1 2015 which has just released, and without a single issue. And at 60FPS 1080p. Just for comparison sake, my boyfriend can run GTA5 on an AMD Phenom 9850 x4, with 4gb of DDR2, and a single GT630 2gb graphics card with a steady 30FPS at 1080p. Dont ask me how his system runs it, it just does, lol. So the choice is really yours, just don't get scared into jumping ship if you don't want to at the moment. Especially when no one knows at this time just how the new AMD chips will perform when they are released sometime next year.

If you buy a new motherboard, make sure to pick up some thermal compound and isopropyl alcohol. As you will need to clean of the existing thermal compound on your heatsink and CPU. Just be careful with it, and make sure to use something that is lint free.

Thank you, I'm looking for a microATX board. Are there any microATX boards that will have a good VRM and AM3+ socket
