i7-3770 z77 time to upgrade?

Go to solution Solved by Ketcchup,

No, Skylake is not offering even a 5% IPC increase. Your next possible upgrade point is AMD Zen or Kaby Lake (2016 both). Your 3770K is still strong, specially overclocked.

I currently have an i7-3770 non k with a z77 sabertooth mobo.

I was thinking that I might upgrade late this year or early next year.

Current specs

CPU: i7-3770

Mobo: Sabertooth z77

Ram: 8Gb Hyper X genesis

GPU: EVGA GTX970

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (I just got it yesterday ;) it's mint, it's bigger that I thought it would be

Why do you need to upgrade? It is still going to be a very strong computer when skylake is released.

No need to upgrade a 3770 for gaming right now.  Probably not even worth it in Skylake.

And a 970 should do fine right? Or do you want to move to 4K (or 1440p even?)

Tbh bro, I've had this PC for a while but only just got into understanding PC's this year. My plan was to upgrade mine and make my old (current pc) the new family PC as the current family PC is a shit box

Yeah I'm not foolish enough to chase the 4K dream, Graphics is a big part of gaming for me so I'm considering a 1440p 144Hhz monitor so I might upgrade my 970 (my mate already has dibs on it as he's still go a 500 series card)

That's pure consumerism, if you want a family PC a simple G3220 (or even a Celeron G1620) will be enough. Buying a Haswell/Skylake CPU now is not worth at all, specially when the competition will start again when AMD releases ZEN next year.

Okay so skylake isnt worth it, I dont like AMD only had bad experiences so my intel fanboy game is strong.

I've only got the 3770 non k bro.

Does overclocking reduce the life of parts by alot or at all?

Yes it does, but not too much if done carefully. Still, 3770 non K is strong.

So it wouldn't bottleneck a 980ti or titan X? Btw just asking as these are the best cards around, are they not?

Maybe a veeery little, but it's not worth spending that much money in a new system for a 10-15% upgrade in performance.

Tbh 10-15% is a pretty big number, but then again so is the price to upgrade the parts
