My 4770k is currently running 4.5Ghz @ 1.355v

This chip I have is a relatively bad overclocker.

While running the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, I get 93-97 degrees Celsius MAX (H100i)

I'm thinking that's bad :S

Should I turn it down a bit? Maybe 4.2 @ 1.23v?

Those temperatures look pretty good for Haswell.

Note: I said for Haswell. Haswell is known to get pretty hot.

you may have to push so much volts to it because of instabilty somewhere else.

try this to begin. find stability at 4.4ghz, then push for 4.5.

follow this step by step, do not change anything else!

install latest bios

clear cmos

change your multiplier to 44 and your vcore voltage to 1.23V ( you may need 1.24, 1.25, 1.26V)

set your ram at 1333MHz and manually input the stock voltage for your ram ( if your ram calls for 1.35V i would set it at 1.5V to start)

leave all other settings, dont change anything else.

try to boot and stress test with the ietu

start at 1.23V on the cpu vcore. keep incresing it in .01 increments ( 1.24,1.25, 1.26, 1.27, 1.28V) untill your stable for 8 hours. i dont suggest going past 1.28V for 4.4 GHz

I plan on posting an haswell oc guide\video soon

lol at 94-95 your cpu will throttle down.

thats not a proper overclock

Haslel housefires?

Can't wait to get my direct on die cooling kit, 50 degree temps come at me!

post a link.

i considered running my chip naked, but the heatsinks base will not make proper contact with the cpu die on a LGA socket.

I haven't got the parts yet. Got a fella from EK trying to track down a kit for me :)

You actually take the latch mechanism completely out, so the cpu just sits on top of the pins, then lower the waterblock onto it and use the block itself to hold the cpu into place. I'll be putting a build guide up once I get all my parts :D

cool, makes sense. i always figured the latching mechanism was essential for the cpu to be properlly fastend to the socket, but i havent tried otherwise on a LGA platform

the only time i have killed a cpu was from improperlly torquing down a large heatsink on an old amd skt 462 chip with the die exposed.

Nah the latch would just get in the way and cause a huge gap if there's no IHS, so it has to go :)

I've delidded a 3570k before, but never cooled directly on die before, so it shall be an education :D

my best results were replacing the stock tim with arctic mx-2 . i tried ceramique and as5. they both worked good for 4-5 days then the temps went back up, i saw this mostly after i mounted my board in the case, i think it had to do with a combination of the board being vertical and stress testing for days on end.

Okay. Let's say I do find stability at 4.4 lower than 1.28v What are my next steps?

-bring up the ring bus

-bring up the memory

one step at a time. the ring bus is tricky. i cant help you with that untill you get your cpu frequency stable first.

after we get you stable at the best possible 4.4ghz overclock

we can then push for 4.5 and higher.

even without the throttling, i'd be worried putting that amount of heat through a CPU in terms of longevity! Also, is that not monumentally loud? :P

I'd turn it down!

I'm using 2x SP120 Quiet Ed.  They don't go past 1350RPM. Maybe that's why? :P

Atleast it isn't a bad chip, I've seen i5 3570k get to 85 degrees at only 4.0Ghz, while using NHD-14, until he de-lid the CPU and applied better thermal compound, then got around 50  degrees

There are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary, and those who don't.

this isnt helping your cooling solution.

im running sp 120 performance editions. all i can say is they run really well at at 2350 rpm.

3c lower at load. ya thats not a huge difference but its still performing better.

any luck with 4.4?

It was the most stable with 1.25v at ~15 mins stress test.

Tried 1.26 and 1.27 but those gave me BSODs.

I'm at stock right now, playing some Battlefield 3. Will find a proper voltage later today.

Yes turn it down but more like 4.3 1.25v and see how that goes.
