Guyz could some one please explain the difference between HDD vs SSHD vs SSD and their price/GB (approx) comparison.

Also is it better to upgrade from HDD to SSD than from HDD to SSHD considering the price/performance ratio.

Thanks in advance..

Better to upgrade from HDD to SSD, you'll see noticeable performance increase.

Oh and SSHD, they're like HDD and SSD fused together. They're not slow, but not as fast as an SSD with a size of an HDD like 1TB.

Not as cheap as HDD, but not as expensive as SSD, so SSHD is like in the middle.

Speed:

SSD > SSHD > HDD

Where to keep important data:

HDD due to being able to recover them if HDD fails. You cant do that from SSD.

Where to keep your OS:

SSD because it makes everything run a lot faster.

Price per GB:

HDD > SSHD > SSD

Basically...

HDD -  Slow but very cheap. Good for mass storage

SSD -  Fast but high cost/GB. Good for the OS, maybe a few programs and games.

SSHD - Waste of money, poor performing drives with poor performing NAND, more points of failure. In other words, nothing but a marketing gimmick to sell drives that don't perform as they should. Good for 4k writes but that's about it.

Harsh, but essentially true for desktop usage. But for eg. a laptop with only one storage bay, an SSHD makes sense if you need more storage space and/or a lower price than a pure SSD.

I'm planning on buying a secondary Storage Drive for my PC >=2 TB.

What do you guyz suggest i should buy.

As far as i hv learned from the internet Wd greens are the best option avaliable.

Are there any other options....

WD Greens are definitely not the best option.

Too bad WD Blues are only 1TB but you can also pick Seagate Barracuda 2TB. They are definitely better than WD Greens. They are more like WD Blue.

snip

For backup, yes WD Green is great, they're quiet and consume less power but sacrifice performance. WD Blue is like in the middle, between power saving and performance. WD Black is more to performance.

If you want to know more @Captain_WD knows a lot about this.

Looking around at some Indian online stores it seems that the Barracuda tends to be the cheapest drive that people consider reliable.

Toshiba has a drive which is a bit more expensive, just in case you don't want to go with Seagate for whatever reason. Though it's a 5.7k drive as opposed to Seagates 7.2k.

I see a lot of negative reviews of seagate comapred to WD. Is seagate really poor in quality and wear out early...

People still recommend Seagate so I assume they'll be fine. They don't take beatings like other brands though, Seagate's consumer drives are made just for that, consumer use.

Personally I don't buy seagate because of a combination of bad Samsung hard drives (rebranded seagate drives) and price, in the UK there's usually cheaper options from Hitachi and Toshiba.

I didn't look at Hitachi and toshiba earlier.

Are they also good in quality....

I'm not a specific brand Fan so i can consider as many choices i have.

Well HGST is owned by WD so that would be a sign of good quality right out the gate.

Toshiba, there's not much about them out there, people don't seem to like them. From what I've seen, a lot of their 3.5" drives are HGST rebrands. They sorted out OCZ's problem with reliability though.

Hey AnkitJha,

HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) are your basic storage drive with one or more spinning magnetic platters that store your data on a magnetic principle. They have a read/write head that hovers over the platter in order to read or write the data. They tend to reach the largest sizes, be the cheapest in terms of price/GB and are the most used ones. As every mechanical unit, failures do happen due to a number of reasons. I would pick a HDD for massive storage, basic computing and not-so-demanding usage such as moderate gaming, office usage and home usage. :)

SSDs (Solid State Drives) are storage drives that have no moving parts and store data on cells as electrical charges. These drives tend to be up to 5 times (on a SATA connection) faster than conventional HDDs and even faster on other connections (PCIe). They are much more expensive in terms of price per GB compared to the other types but offer great performance. SSDs have limited amount of write cycles and when they reach it, they become read-only drives. These drives are highly recommended for storing the OS, heavier applications and most-frequently used things for faster loading times, faster transfer speeds and quick access times. I wouldn't use them for massive secondary storage, though.

SSHDs (Solid State Hybrid Drives) are a sort of combination between the first two types. These are regular HDD drives with a spinning platter, read/write head and regular cache and have an additional (8GB most of the times) SSD portion that also caches the HDD. These drives use algorithms to figure out what are the most commonly used things on a computer and store their load files on the SSD part for very short loading times. These drives are recommended for mobile computers, gaming single-drive builds and setups that are running just one or just a few applications and everything else is used very rarely. I wouldn't use that for secondary massive storage either.

Dual-Drives are storage drives that combine a SSD and a HDD in one form factor and the two parts work independently from each other. Such example would be WD Black2: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=CqUXfH

Since you are planning on buying a secondary storage drive, this means you are not looking so much for performance, but rather for good price for large amounts of storage and reliability. I would go for a HDD for this purpose. WD Green is indeed a good drive for this as it works cool, quiet, rather inexpensive regarding the $/GB ratio and is pretty reliable.

I would look online for as many reviews and comment as you can find and see what is the general opinion about such drives. This should give you the best idea. :)

Feel free to ask if you happen to have questions,

Captain_WD.
