It's not worth it

what do you do with IDE drives then?

I have a stack of 7 40gb IDE drives...

no that only converts the power. If you want to get the data off then a USB to ide adapter is he cheapest way to go. If you want to use the drives in a PC then a pci ide adapter is he cheapest option.

If you have a computer surplus store near you you may be able to get a ide raid card that will let you use all of those at one. you could probally get that for 30 USD. The other problem is that running a ton of old drives makes lots of heal(almost 100w) and its better(and cheaper including powerbills) to buy a new 1TB drive. Unless you have old system than you need drives for they are useless.
