Need help choosing bookshelf speakers for desk use for music listening, I'm looking to spend 200-500 dollars for a pair. I have the Onkyo A-9050 to power them. I will not be using them with a sub woofer and I listen to Techno and other bassy genres so bass is important. Thanks

Why bookshelves? You should consider floor standing speakers with that budget.

Two passive KRK's would put you at $300 (sold as single units): http://www.amazon.com/KRK-R6G3-Generation-Passive-Monitor/dp/B00FRI2IBO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1436319623&sr=8-1&keywords=passive+studio+monitors

The powered versions are popular and bassy, passive shouldn't be too different. With a nice budget like yours, it might be better to ask on a more speaker-oriented forum. /r/audiophile is a pretty good one.

Audio Engine A5+?

How about the P4 since he already has an amp?

Hope that's a joke.

That does not look like a review I can trust.

I mean, the speakers aren't even on a stable surface. And look at that cabling mess - who knows what kind of distortion is happening back there?!

I wrote the review in question. The piles of junk to hold the speakers up were used to make a point that you don't need special stands to put your speakers on. Just about anything would work, and anything is better than having speakers sitting flat on a desk, which is a nasty reflective surface.

As for the measurements in that review, there were no distortion measurements done. Those require a bit more equipment I just don't have at my location. The Frequency response measurements that were done were completed outside and windowed(limited in the time domain) so that no reflections impacted the results. I assure you that the Audioengine P4 speakers are in fact inacurate, but with the DSP correction they can be pretty good. Here is someone who had some success using the correction. https://www.reddit.com/r/NoAudiophile/comments/2cjcy6/audioengine_p4_dsp_correction/

I was completely joking about the stuff holding up the speakers. Most of the regulars here would catch the sarcasm. While I believed your findings, I merely meant I couldn't trust one lone random review popping up from the abyss. At the same time, I wasn't really suggesting the P4 so much as correcting another user's recommendation of a powered monitor.

Anywhozzle, thanks for the due diligence of measurements. Objective reviews are nice.

Sorry for butting in and ask another question, but I'm also looking for a near field computer speaker $150 max. Active or passive both are alright

I went for le cliche Micca speakers recently. MB42X and PB42X are all the rage on various audiofeels forhams. I got the powered PB42X and iz nice.

It's pretty good in my small bedroom. Can increase it a bit by backing them closer to a wall if needed, but I haven't found it necessary. Obviously not going to rumble anything, but that's what subwoofers are for.

For that price range the MB/PB42x is definitely the way to go. I've got a DSP correction for the PB42x which makes some solid improvements to the sound, including a little bass extension. You can give it a shot over here

Instructions at the top of the page, and the correction for the current version of the speaker is at the bottom of the page.
