NO YOU DON'T REALLY NEED ONE, AN AMP OF DAC IS PROBABLY BETTER

Oops, sorry caps ;)

A soundcard is not needed nowadays, with adequate motherboard/onboard audio.

So?

And AMP or DAC can be set up somewhere else other than in your PC, so that is why I said it might be better.

And it wont occupy a PCI slot in your PC and wont hinder airflow and stuff.

I can tell by the fact that you're asking this question that the answer is no.

You could've worded it better. You said he does not need a soundcard and later recommend an amp or dac of which both are on a soundcard anyway. You mean external amp or dac and even so, having any of those two does not make the sound automatically 'better'.

OP, it's best to change your headphone first that suits your listening style before spending on external amp or dac, unless your onboard audio is broken.
