r9 380 2GB or 4GB

so i will be playing the occasional demanding title like battlefield or cod and was wondering if it would be worth getting the 4gb over the 2gb this card  is going to be in this pc for a while so it will need to be good in the future

The 4gb card is worth it as if you are going to be buying a 2gb card then you may aswell get a 285.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

I haven't been able to find any benchmarks to confirm that sadly. I know the 390 beats out the 290x at the same price and I was really hoping there would be a pattern where the 380 beats the 280x at or near the same price.

 

Have you seen any benchmarks that confirm the 280x beats the 380? The refresh (not rebrand) may not have changed the GPU core but it certainly did upgrade the supporting bits and updated the bios and drivers which seem to have given the 300 series a much needed boost in performance.

 

Also probably 4gb as the either card should be pushing 1440 at decent settings.

well in older games it may not be worth, but in some newer AAA titles R9 380 beats r9 280x a lil

They are the same thing. The rumour is the 380X will be fully unlocked Tonga, and that might even be interesting...

 

On the other hand, as soon as AMD do that Nvidia are going to finally release the 960 Ti.

The thing is that some people already have there hands on the R9 300 series nobody knows anything about a 960ti.

The thing is that some people already have there hands on the R9 300 series nobody knows anything about a 960ti.

Moreover there are no rumours or anything about the cards neither from amd nor nvidia :D

For the prices of both, I'd get the 4gb version. Will last more and in some vram demanding games you will see a good bump in the framerate.

How wrong you are. Overall 280x is just a bit better than 380, and only because of old games prefering better raw performance. But the 380 beats the 280x in quite amount of games.

Civilization: Beyond Earth, Metro Last Light, Thief, Witcher 3, Project Cars, Bioshock Infinite, Shadow of Mordor, Grid: Autosport... are some of them.

 

And that is just pure performance comparison. If we add technologies, dx12 support and performance, and power consumption, then the 380 is the clear winner.

 

The 280x has been a tremendous gpu for some ages, but time passes and it's not longer what it was, specially compared to newer ones.

I thought the 960 was fully enabled gm 206 chip. What exactly would the 960 Ti be? We already have a cut version of the GM204 we call it the 970 and if you handicap that anymore it simply becomes the 960?

The rumour is (and you'll notice I keep using that word :P) that we will have a further cut-down GM 204. The 970 is only marginally different from the 980, and there is a big difference between the 960 and 970 so it's not infeasible to create something between them from GM204
