HL2 textures and stuff should come with Garry's Mod itself (the stand-alone version, that is. The old mod requires HL2). The most important textures are from Counter Strike: Source, and Half Life 2: Episode 2.

 

Half-Life 2: Episode 1 doesn't provide anything.

 

Team Fortress 2 content isn't usually needed, but it's free, so why not?

 

Portal content is mostly unnecessary, but some things might need it. The priority is on CS:S, HL2 Ep 2 and TF2 though, in that order.

 

Portal 2 content isn't supported right away, neither is Left 4 Dead 2 content, due to them running on a newer version of the Source (not Source 2 though), but Steam workshop has fixes for them AFAIK. And Left 4 Dead (1) content just might work, no guarantees though.

Not nessecarily to make it work at all, but some servers use Counter Strike Source or Half Life textures (which are not included in Gmod itself, but only in those 2 games) which is kind of stupid..

But you are able to download those textures of the interwebs..

You mean if I enter a server which uses say HL textures but since I don't have those textures so the server will automatically send texture files to me?

you sould buy source if you're going to play Gmod. steam has a bundle i think.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

No, the server doesn't say anything, the game works, but will look like this:

Unfortunatelyi just have $19 left in my steam wallet and I won't be able to buy any of those games AMD the guy so gave me sold me steam gift card is outta city so yeah.
