970 now vs waiting for Pascal?

Go to solution Solved by gl3nnn,

Tossing up between getting a GTX970 now or waiting for the newer pascal 1000 series cards. I haven't really been keeping up with hardware for a while but with starwars battlefront and fallout 4 coming its time to upgrade my very slow gtx 560. The biggest deciding factor is basically will the new Nvidia GPUs be out by the end of the year in time for game season? with the 970 already 9 months old and I dont really need the horsepower until November. On the other hand my ever growing pile of shame which is mostly only playable on mid settings (it just makes me wanna cry) wont be getting any smaller without an upgrade.

Sorry if its a basic question but theres very little info out there, some saying pascal in 2016, some "by 2016"

Thanks

I'm exactly in the same situation as you, i want to upgrade my 7950.

But judging by Nvidia release dates, the past few years, we may see a new Titan early next year (Nvidia seems to release them in Feb) which may or may not include the HBM technology.

You can roughly gauge the release dates.

Quoted from another thread (it may not be accurate, but its something to think about):

This is the history of Nvidia releases :

580 -> 680 = Nov 2010 -> Mar 2012 = 16 months
680 -> 780 = Mar 2012 -> May 2013 = 14 months
780 -> 980 = May 2013 -> Sep 2014 = 16 months

780ti -> 980 = Nov 2013 -> Sept 2014 = 10 months
980ti June 2015

x80 to x80 average = 15 months
x80ti to x80 = 10 months

So that would mean a new 1080 between :

Mar 2016 and April 2016

For the last 3 generations you could predict the launch window within 1 or 2 months on a 14-16month turn around.  So its a pretty good guess.

Honestly, I don't expect Pascal to be THAT great, unless it uses HBM or something similar.

Even then, you're looking at best, 10-15% increase.

Honestly I'd buy a 970 now and wait about 3 years to upgrade, by then something better than Pascal will be out, along with hopefully, 4k 144 hz monitors. Oh yea.....

I'm saving for a 970, because I share your pain of still using a GTX 560.

There is always a better graphics card on the horizon. You need to draw a line somewhere. There is always buyer's remorse for not waiting. This is the curse of technology.

Just pick a budget and a time frame.

Example:

"I need a new graphics card by_________, because my games no longer run the way I want them to. I will only spend _____ at this time."

Heres the best piece of advice I have been given and thus hand out like candy from a white panel van.

If your card doesn't do what you NEED it to, upgrade it. Take the money you have and go buy a better card. And yes as gamers we do have a need to play games at X settings or Y fps. It's in our nature. So if you don't need that now don't buy it now. When you pick up a game and the settings are unacceptably low the first time you try to play it, go get a new card. There is always something out on the horizon to wait for, to pine for.

Pascal is going to use HMB version 2. 970 Now...yea.... or get a used 770 if you don't want to spend more than $220. You'll also get 4 Gb not 3.5.

I think that if I knew I was going to get Pascal though, no doubt I'd just get a replacement card and not anything new. I bought the GTX 770 4 Gb used and it works great....was only 4 months old. This is my transition card I think until Pascal.

WOW not much love for pascal then, arnt they going from 28nm maxwell to like 14-16 nm for pascal, Nvidia saying 10x speeds?

But if its not looking like it will be out this year then 970 defiantly wins, im not one for waiting around, Ill probs upgrade the rest of my system when skylake comes out giving me the option of SLI, my old 1st gen core i7 920 is probs starting to become a bottle neck now

I dont really want to go 780, they use a more power compared with 560/970, my old 1000W PSU only has 1x 6 pin (no 8 pin) and a bunch of moxel connectors and 780 is still expensive even used, locally only like 25-30% cheaper then 970.

Thanks for the help guys

Its not so much no love for Pascal its more like I said there is always something a half year out or a year out that is going to be better. When pascal first comes out I'm sure there will be leaks about the next architecture if it isnt already leaked or planned now. Then its like well should I spend a bunch now or just a little and save money for the next thing.
