Windows 7 home premium to professional upgrade

id like to buy windows 7 professional for my pc as i found it for $20 on /r/microsoftsoftwareswap and it will pay off as is ill upgrade to win10 pro instead of home (as i have home premium atm).

 

if i buy the normal win7 professional key, not an anytime upgrade key, will i be able to upgrade to it from home premium without having to do a fresh install?

Unfortunately no. I had to use an upgrade disc and key (the same as Windows anytime upgrade except not online) instead of a full copy of Windows 7, though after the upgrade key is activated you can just install Windows 7 Pro without needing to upgrade from Home Premium to Pro.

Well I mean there are some benefits. You can't do some software RAID configurations through windows without professional, for instance.

Really? Because I could under Windows 7 Home Premium.

software raid is handled by the motherboard not OS

It can be handled by both the motherboard (depending on the integrated RAID controller) and by Windows.

sure, but i like being able to control the updates that are installed on my pc, which is not possible in windows 10 home, instead, i'd get every single update forced upon me.

 

Also i think remote desktop is still only for pro, but don't quote me on that...
